Play | New Play from Kennedy Center-Featured Writer: We the People of these Fifty Acre Woods

Inspired by A.A. Milne's classic characters, the beloved 100 Acre Wood is in the midst of a civil war. Throughout this multi-year conflict, childhood friends Winnie, Christopher, and H.P. Piglet find themselves on different paths. H.P. struggles with the moral dilemmas of being a soldier, Christopher discovers what can happen when the powerless gain power, and Winnie is on the run for dodging the draft. Part war epic, part whimsical absurdism, this play looks at how people justify violence, the lengths you'll go to defend what you believe in and if fire is fought with fire - will the acres just burn to the ground? Movie in a Park | Identity, Migration, and Memory: Three Short Documentaries Exploring American Chinatowns

Luka Yuanyuan Yang is a visual artist and filmmaker whose practice, characterized by interwoven documentary and archival materials, addresses themes of identity, migration, and memory, challenging conventional historical narratives and amplifying overlooked voices. During a year-long research trip across the US in 2018, Yang was captivated by the rich history of migration and adaptation in America's Chinatowns. From 1882 until the 1950s, due to the Chinese Exclusion Act and racial discrimination, Chinese Americans were largely confined to Chinatowns. During this same period, Yang began researching the stories of Chinese women in 20th-century American performing arts, seeking to uncover the experiences of Chinese women performers whose stories have been forgotten or misunderstood by history. Yang's exploration of these neighborhoods, the Chinese diaspora, and performing artists has become the central focus of her short films and feature film Chinatown Cha-Cha, and her recently published artist book Dance in Herland. In a time of rising threats to America's Chinatowns, the artist brings generations together through film, dance, and dialogue. For this screening, Yang presents Tales of Chinatown, an exhibition of three of her short films: Cantonese Tunes on Mott Street (2022), The Lady From Shanghai (2019), and Tales of Chinatown (2019). By following her protagonists on the streets, through their communities, and into their homes, Yang amplifies the voices of those often denied the chance to share their own stories--individuals who have been forgotten, silenced, or misinterpreted.

Theater | The Imaginary Invalid: Moliere's Comedy-Ballet Starring Broadway Actor

Argan is ill. But is he? Argan is dying. But aren't we all? Argan wants absolute control. But is that ever achievable? After a series of upside down attempts to snap him out of it, a solution is found. But will it save him? The Imaginary Invalid is the last play that legendary French playwright Moliere wrote and was originally conceived as a Comedy-Ballet where theater, dance, and music are intertwined. It explores the fear of disease and the exploitation it breeds through infinitely humorous dialogue and in-your-face satire. This production will feature original choreography by FlexN dancer Cal Hunt, original music by cellist Johnathan Moore, and stars Tony and Olivier Award nominee Sahr Ngaujah. Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would serve as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Each tour is one hour, followed by a 15-minute Q&A session with an assigned docent. Start times: 10:30 am, 12 pm, 1:30 pm

Musical | New, Original Musical Inspired by the Three Stooges: For Love or Funny

This event is the first public presentation of a piece developed during an incubator program, For Love or Funny, by fellowship recipients Sonya Hayden and Megan Loughran! For Love or Funny is a classic musical comedy which reimagines the Three Stooges as a trio of sisters: Mo, Mary, and Curly. In a goofy, slapstick version of 1930s Brooklyn, the sisters' family-owned clothing store is about to close--unless they can somehow get a whopping $500 by the next day. When they learn that the cops are offering that exact reward for the capture of a notorious robber, they hatch a harebrained scheme to catch him themselves. Along the way, our trio must rely on their bonds of sisterhood to succeed, while navigating mix-ups, mayhem, mistaken identities, and more. As a female writing duo, fellowship winners Loughran and Hayden are excited to put a modern twist on old-school comedy and center bold female characters who get to land the punches and the punchlines.

Book Club | Book Club Discussion: Yellowface by R. F. Kuang

Book Synopsis: Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars. But Athena’s a literary darling. June Hayward is literally nobody. Who wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers during World War I. So what if June edits Athena’s novel and sends it to her agent as her own work? So what if she lets her new publisher rebrand her as Juniper Song—complete with an ambiguously ethnic author photo? Doesn’t this piece of history deserve to be told, whoever the teller? That’s what June claims, and the New York Times bestseller list seems to agree. But June can’t get away from Athena’s shadow, and emerging evidence threatens to bring June’s (stolen) success down around her. As June races to protect her secret, she discovers exactly how far she will go to keep what she thinks she deserves. With its totally immersive first-person voice, Yellowface grapples with questions of diversity, racism, and cultural appropriation, as well as the terrifying alienation of social media. R.F. Kuang’s novel is timely, razor-sharp, and eminently readable.

Opening Reception | Group Illustration Show that Twists Time and Space: The Visit to the Museum

The Visit to the Museum is an exhibition that explores a story where a realistic pursuit turns into a surrealist one; it starts with the search for the painting of a lost relative and results in a protagonist who finds themselves stripped of everything--from clothing to their sense of security--mental or physical. It's a group show of illustrated artwork by 20 emerging artists, MFA students of an Illustration as Visual Essay program. Time and space continuously twist exponentially in a small provincial museum where expected artifacts unravel into unexpected chaos. Ancient columns, Egyptian sarcophagi, taxidermy, whale bones, buzzard specimens and paintings of questionable value compose a magnificent wunderkammer from which there's no escape. Page after page, an initially typical visit to the museum devolves into a time warped sequence of events with rare illustrative potential. Time, space but also individual artifacts and their symbolic details make for the perfect springboard towards a series of images that show and tell elaborate depictions of situations the mind's eye is often incapable of seeing. This multitude of pictorial opportunities translates into a variety of approaches, spanning from picture books that faithfully follow the storyline to cut out paper collages cut by laser, mystery objects in narrative frames, bold portraiture, delicate artifact drawings of personal value and multiple meanings, complex diorama triptychs full of anything one could imagine, detailed architectural blueprints of how madness could unfold from one room to another, alternative suggestions of what a museum galleries can look like, puzzles that compose by decomposing the mysteries at hand, optical illusions that simultaneously reveal what is and what is not to the naked eye, and more. The exhibition will be on view from Thursday, May 15, through Tuesday, May 27.

Screening | The Holocaust, 80 Years On (2025): Holocaust Documentary + Q&A

Marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Holocaust death camps, renowned historian Sir Simon Schama confronts the history of the Holocaust as not just a Nazi obsession, but as a Europe-wide crime. Schama visits mass killing sites in Lithuania, the home of his mother's family. He travels to the Netherlands, a nation famed for its long history of tolerance and where he lived and worked as a young historian, to answer the question of why fewer Jews survived here than in any other Western occupied country. The film also captures the emotional toll of Schama's first-ever visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Trinity Choir and Trinity Baroque Orchestra, led by organist Avi Stein, highlight Bach's beautiful Ich hab in Gottes Herz und Sinn (cantata 92), a sacred work that references the soul's surrender as the way to heaven. Then glory in the masterful Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D Major -- Bach's first major work for solo harpsichord and orchestra. The wildly popular Brandenburg Concertos gave almost every period instrument a place to shine, and the fifth spotlights the flute, violin, and harpsichord -- which it moves into the limelight with an unforgettable cadenza (a technically brilliant passage) unlike anything of its time.

Book Club | Novella Discussion Joseph Roth's Rebellion

During this novella discussion, the group will focus on Joseph Roth's 1924 novella, Rebellion. "Rebellion is reminiscent of Chekhov in its uncluttered, melancholy simplicity, while its sense of the larger, crushing incomprehensibility of things echoes Roth's older contemporary, Frank Kafka." --Richard Bernstein, The New York Times Synopsis: When Andreas Pum returns from World War I, he has lost a leg but gained a medal. But unlike his fellow sufferers, Pum maintains his unswerving faith in God, Government, and Authority. Ironically, after a dispute, Pum is imprisoned as a rebel, and all that he believed in is now thrown into upheaval. Moving along at a breakneck clip, Rebellion captures the cynicism and upheavals of a postwar society. Its jazz-like cadences mix with social commentary to create a wise parable about justice and society.

Film | Vishniac (2023): Documentary on Pre-WWII Jewish Photographer

Vishniac is about Russian-American photographer Roman Vishniac, who's best known for traveling through Eastern Europe from 1935 to 1938, photographing Jewish life in Eastern Europe. Few predicted that less than a decade later, these communities would be destroyed, and that Vishniac’s photographs would provide the last visual records of an entire world. He was a pioneer of microscopic photography and one of the first to use photography as a documentary tool. As anti-Semitism grew in his native Russia, he fled to Berlin, only to flee again to New York when the Nazis came to power. Throughout his journey, he never put his camera down. His daughter and grandchildren tell the intimate (and traumatic) family story of the man who became one of the world’s most renowned nature photographers. The film features his stunning photographs for Life magazine, as well as tragically moving images of life in Jewish towns just before the Holocaust. The purpose of the photographs was to raise funds for impoverished Jewish communities, and he later continued his efforts using these images to draw the attention of the American government to the terrible fate of Jews in Europe during the war. His legacy also includes portraits of celebrities--Albert Einstein's favorite portrait was of himself painted by Vishniac. Director: Laura Bialis

From Billie Holiday's haunting performance of Strange Fruit to Sylvia Robinson's game-changing introduction of hip hop at Webster Hall, women have long transformed nightlife into a platform for cultural and political change. This virtual lecture explores the legacy of female nightlife activists who, through taverns, clubs, speakeasies, and dance floors, challenged norms, united communities, and influenced the city's cultural landscape. The program highlights icons such as Norma Miller, who revolutionized swing dance, and Patti Astor, who brought graffiti and New Wave art into the mainstream.

Lecture | Learn about the Brain's Evolution and the Way People Learn

In this engaging lecture, Harvard Professor Chris Kuzawa will take attendees on a fascinating journey to uncover the "caloric price tag" of our uniquely complex brains and the way we learn. Professor Kuzawa and his team have discovered some surprising truths about when our brains dominate our body's energy budgets. It's not when we're newborns, even though babies have such large heads compared to their bodies. Instead, it's during childhood, when the brain is buzzing with activity as kids learn at lightning speed. These energy demands are so high that they outpace the energy that 5-year-olds expend on physical activity, and they account for an amazing two-thirds of the body's energy use at rest, which is a large enough caloric drain to influence how we grow. As the brain's energy needs peak, the body's growth slows down-- with growth and learning trading off for resources over time as kids get older. Indeed, our hungry brains help explain why our children grow at a pace more typical of a cold-blooded reptile than a warm-blooded mammal! These findings offer new glimpses into human evolution, including insights into how our ancestors evolved our energy-intensive form of thinking and learning. A key piece of this puzzle was the development of uniquely human strategies for childcare, like sharing food and raising children cooperatively, which helped meet our developing brains' high energy needs. Because the brain dominates the body's use of energy in childhood, this work is also providing new insights into contemporary societal and health issues, including nutritional needs during the school years, and patterns of weight gain and body composition. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the incredible journey of our brain's evolution and its impact on our lives today.

Screening | World Premiere of Hip-Hop Documentary: Fat Beats, Performance by Fat Beats DJ, and Talk Back Panel

Back in the mid-nineties, DJ Jab (aka Joseph Abajian) opened Fat Beats, New York City's first Hip-Hop specialist music store in the Lower East Side. The shop rapidly became a nexus for the city's burgeoning underground rap community, evolving from cipher spot and culture matrix into an influential label and distributor in a matter of months. A list of artists releasing LPs on Fat Beats over the past three decades reads like a Mount Rushmore of indie rap, including Atmosphere, Black Milk, ILL BILL, Organized Konfusion, Talib Kweli, Madlib and Kool Keith to name only a few. Now headquartered on the west coast, Fat Beats remains a crucial part of NYC Hip-Hop history. In celebration of Fat Beats' 30th Anniversary, guest curator and the voice and personality of Spotify's AI DJ, Xavier "X" Jernigan, introduces the premiere of the new Fat Beats documentary film, accompanied by an opening set from a Fat Beats DJ and followed by a talk back panel, from the names that made the scene come to life.

The Queen's Heart is a distillation of George Frideric Handel's Radamisto, an opera seria, is a saga of familial treachery and marital love which unfolds in bittersweet beauty, one ravishing aria after another.

Director and Translator: Lucie Tiberghien Choreographer and Dancer: Cal Hunt Composer and Cellist: Johnathan Moore Cast: Dante Bonner, Mary Bacon, Rory Furey-King, Doron JePaul, Naomi Lorrain, Sahr Ngaujah, Shayvawn Webster
