A walk through the current exhibition, Cursed! The Power of Magic in the Ancient World. From its integration into religious traditions in Mesopotamia and Egypt, to its marginal, often illicit status in Greece and Rome, magic played a central role in ancient societies. Cursed! examines the visualization and practice of magic between 2000 BCE and 300 CE in these communities, featuring rare objects in a variety of media-including sculpture in stone and bronze; decorated ceramics; amulets in semiprecious stones, gold, and silver; and papyrus scrolls. Taken together, these artifacts reveal a shared human desire: to influence the unseen forces shaping life and death.

Participants will explore composition and perspective while photographing some of the park’s best fall foliage viewing, with red maples, sweetgums, and willows along the shoreline displaying spectacular color. And find out once and for all if spirits do return (as Houdini famously claimed to prove was not the case) with a visit to a site of one of the famous Houdini seances! This walking tour takes guests through the Village as the group traces the history of Houdini and his milieu of dime museums and performance in the Golden Age of Magic. And, in the spirit of Halloween -- and the 100th anniversary of Houdini's own mysterious death -- we'll delve into the world-famous battle of Houdini vs. the Spiritualists, and his lasting, complex legacy in the world of the paranormal. A thrilling afternoon where organizers literally put the 'boo' in 'bounced light' and turn those scary shadows into bold, beautiful portraits. From Fear to Flash Express (30-Min Crash Course): Before hitting the haunted streets, the group will kick things off with a power-packed classroom session to demystify flash photography. You'll learn a fast, no-fuss process that'll help you conquer your fear and take control of your lighting-even in the darkest corners of the city. NYC Costume Photowalk: Once you've armed yourself with knowledge (and maybe some garlic), the group will head out into the urban night for a hands-on photowalk featuring a killer model, dramatic vibes, and endless street-style inspiration. Whether you're lighting under streetlamps or creating ghoulishly good shadows, every attendee will get their chance to direct, shoot, and shine. - Open to all levels, especially the flash-curious and the flash-fearful. - Bring your camera, but don't worry about the lighting equipment, as organizers will be bringing a set of strobes and triggers that will guide the group away from badly lit portraits. - Costumes encouraged (but not required)- because let's be real, everything's more fun with a cape.
