Take this summer's coolest walking tour with Tompkins Square Library manager Corinne Neary and street photographer Michael Paul. Once the most densely crowded district in America, the East Village started as a true melting pot of immigrants. It was New York City's first racially integrated neighborhood. Eastern European Jews, Germans, Italians, Irish, Greeks, Hungarians, Poles, Russians, Ukrainians, Puerto Ricans, Muslims, Indians, Koreans and Dominicans all made a new life here. Tompkins Square Park is a place where different cultures share their heritage: art, dance, food, fashion and music. After the Civil War, Tompkins Square Park was the only major open space for immigrants to gather and relax on the east side of Manhattan between Union Square and City Hall.

Steeped in artistic, political and progressively social history, Greenwich Village today remains a cultural melting pot. The ‘Village’ has been, and remains a bohemian capitol, a center of the modern LGBT movement and one of the birthplaces of the ‘Beat’ and 60’s counter culture movements. Alongside historic landmarks the tours visit the Villages’ modern day institutions, observing where the places todays Villagers’ work, live and play, and where they maintain the sense of the unique, bizarre and beautiful bohemia we call Greenwich Village. In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” This tour repeats every Monday.

On May 24, 1883, journalist Montgomery Schuyler said "It so happens that the work which is likely to be our most durable monument, and to convey some knowledge of us to the most remote posterity, is a work of bare utility; not a shrine, not a fortress, not a palace, but a bridge." This tour will tell the story of the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge, and examine its ever-present historical, technological, and cultural impact.

The Brooklyn "Cultural District" is growing: with the recent openings of the sparkling new Theatre for a New Audience and the BRIC Arts Center, along with the expansive Gotham Market and other destination restaurants on Fulton Street, the promise of a major new cultural district in Brooklyn is finally being realized. But beyond the new, are institutions that have excelled here for years: from the Irondale Ensemble, to MoCADA (Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts); from BAM Harvey to Greenlight Bookstore to Spike Lee's 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. This two-hour guided walking tour allows you to experience the old, the new, and what's to come! Learn how this concentration of venues and people is shifting the cultural landscape of the borough and the city, while you discover the surprising historical core: a flourishing Fulton Street arts center, of more than a century ago. Over the 120 minutes, you will stroll through the gorgeous brownstone-dotted streets of Fort Greene, past both spontaneous and commissioned street art, to see where more than a dozen spaces and locations have already made the Brooklyn Cultural District a major arts destination for performances of every type, large and small. Adding to the Brooklyn cultural experience, "pop-up" performances by Fort Greene's American Opera Projects, accompany the tour. Tour Leader Dr. Ron Janoff is a licensed tour guide, a professor of Classics, Coordinator of the Rockwell Place Community Garden in the heart of the Brooklyn Cultural District, and a long-time Fort Greene resident. He has led walking tours of Brooklyn and Manhattan for more than 25 years.

This event takes place every Saturday from June 2 to September 29.
