Park Walk | (IN-PERSON, outdoors) Tide Deck Tour

The design of the park's Pier 26 is inspired by the Manhattan shoreline that would have existed prior to Henry Hudson's 1609 expedition. The pier includes a series of ecological communities representing this native landscape, including from a woodland forest to the rocky tidal zone and the Hudson River itself. One of the most unique of these native coastal environments is a manufactured rocky tidal marsh, the Tide Deck which is located on the western end of the Pier. The Tide Deck and its marsh plants ebb and flood with our daily tidal cycle, and features many interesting habitat enhancements including tide pools. Take a socially distant tour on the Tide Deck walkway. Staff will talk about this special environment. Please note that COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place for this event.

Park Walk | (In-Person) Foraging Tour: Sweet Cherries, Mulberries, Chicken Mushrooms, and More

Because this park includes so many varied habitats, it's loaded with shoots and greens in early summer, and many of these renewable resources are edible and medicinal. You'll find spicy hedge mustar, poor man's pepper greens, celery-, parsley-, and carrot-flavored goutweed, violet leaves and flowers. You'll also find spicy field pennycress, another member of the mustard family, growing near corn-flavored chickweed. This is also a great time for berries. You'll be collecting large quantities of red, white, and pink mulberries, as well as juneberries and sweet cherries. If there's been enough rain beforehand, the park is an excellent place for mushrooms. Chicken mushrooms, dryad's saddle, and wine-cap stropharias may be growing in abundance. The tour will last for about 4 hours.

Park Walk | (In-Person) Foraging Tour in Central Park: Sweet Berries, Wild Herbs and Vegetables, and More

Central Park, always a great park for foraging, is spectacular in early summer. The fruits alone make the park worth visiting. Two species of mulberries, red and white, and their pink hybrid, drop berries everywhere. You only need to position a drop cloth under a branch and shake, to harvest a year's supply. These berries are perfect in any fruit recipe. They make great jam, and they freeze well too. When the bushes get full sunlight, the juneberries (serviceberries) are also spectacular. With a sweet flavor like blueberries, apples, and almonds, it's a testament to our disregard for nature that no one has ever cultivated this top-notch fruit. Wild herbs and vegetables thrive throughout the park. You'll be looking for poor man's pepper, sheep sorrel, wood sorrel, lamb's-quarters, wild ginger, greenbrier, lady's thumb, purslane, and Asiatic dayflower. Epazote is one of the park's best culinary herbs. A mainstay in Mexican cuisine, it's great in guacamole, salsa, and bean dishes. The tour will last for about 4 hours.

Park Walk | Foraging Tour: Field Garlic, Lady's Thumb, Gourmet Mushrooms and More

This park is one of the best places for early summer foraging. It boasts a large, mature, secondary growth forest, trail edges, thickets, and cultivated areas--all overflowing with wild plants. Sassafras grows in open places in the woods, on hillsides, and in edge habitats. It tastes like root beer, which you can make from the taproots. You can also use it for brewing a delicious, detoxifying tea, or as a cinnamon-like seasoning. You'll also find honewort, an herb with a flavor similar to parsley, celery, and carrots, that will turn any savory dish into something special. The black birch tree, of birch beer fame, is a common forest species that tastes like wintergreen. The twigs, which you can chew, make a delicious non-steroidal anti-inflammatory herb tea, reducing the chance of heart attacks, and you can thicken, season, and sweeten the tea to make black birch Jello. With lots of rain and a bit of luck, gourmet chicken mushrooms, black-staining polypores, and hygrophorus milky mushrooms could be popping up throughout the woods. The tour will last for about 4 hours.

City Walk | Battery Park City Tour: The Business Core

The second of the Skyscraper Museum's three thematic walking tours of Battery Park City covers the middle zone of the commercial core with its 1980s skyscrapers of the original World Financial Center (now Brookfield Place) by architect Cesar Pelli, as well as the expansive North Cove Marina and its public realm. This walk investigates how the planning concept of public-private partnership was both the principle and economic engine of the Battery Park City project. It will consider how the office and retail precinct connects to lower Manhattan and the World Trade Center and how the goal of opening the waterfront to public access and recreation was realized over three decades. Tour duration is around 60 minutes.

Park Walk | Foraging Tour: Wineberries, Kentucky Coffee Trees, and More

Because this park includes so many varied habitats, it's loaded with shoots and greens in early summer, and many of these renewable resources are edible and medicinal. You'll find spicy hedge mustar, poor man's pepper greens, celery-, parsley-, and carrot-flavored goutweed, violet leaves and flowers. You'll encounter Kentucky coffee trees, with seeds you can use to make the world's best caffeine-free coffee substitute, as well as for seasoning hot chocolate, chocolate pudding, and chocolate truffles.  The wineberry: this invasive Asian species of raspberry, which grows in thickets, is way better than any store-bought raspberry. Further on, you'll see poison ivy and by the end of the tour, everyone will be able to recognize it instantly. You'll also find jewelweed, which prevents poison ivy rash if applied after contact, and also cures mosquito bites and insect stings. The tour will last for about 4 hours.

Tour | Rome: The Colosseum (virtual, live stream)

If you come to Rome, you can't miss the Colosseum. It is one of the most, if not the most, iconic Roman monuments still standing today. On this tour with Sara, you will focus on the history and archaeology of the spectacular amphitheatre, also known as the Flavian amphitheatre. Built in 72 a.d by the Flavian family and completed in only 8 years by the Jewish slaves, it was a real stadium dedicated to the gladiatorial fights, animal hunts and public executions. Although it is not possible to go inside of the Colosseum, Sara will show you this main symbol of Rome and its imposing construction that, with almost 2,000 years of history, will bring you back in time to discover the way of life in the Roman Empire.

The third of the Skyscraper Museum's thematic walking tours of Battery Park City covers the north residential neighborhood, which was developed in several phases, beginning with Stuyvesant High School at the northeast edge and the esplanade and Rockefeller Park along the Hudson. A diagonal avenue lined with apartment buildings creates one face of the neighborhood, while the inner courts of the large blocks are connected by the delightful Teardrop Park, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. Explore the experiences of this small park which concentrates landscape architecture into a miniature world. In 2000, the Battery Park City Authority imposed mandatory "Green Guidelines" for all new construction and in 2003 the Solaire became the first residential building in the U.S. constructed to LEED environmental standards. Others we will visit followed, making BPC the nation's first green community. Tour duration is around 60 minutes.

Park Walk | Tide Deck Tour
