Screening | Silent Clowns Film Showcase

Silent Clowns, New York’s longest-running silent film showcase, examines one of the most endearing (not to mention enduring) comedy series ever, Our Gang, which ran theatrically from 1922 to 1944, and then started a whole new lease on life as The Little Rascals on television in the 1950s. The catalyst for the series was Ernie Morrison, a talented child comedian who’s the subject of this tribute program. Special guest Ina Archer, artist and media conservator, joins to present Ernie and the Gang in new restorations of Fire Fighters (1922), The Champeen (1923) and Dogs of War (1923). The Silent Clowns film series reaches the serious film buff by including rarely-screened titles and rare prints, yet it also introduces kids and new audiences to the classics of the silent screen. Screenings feature live piano accompaniment by MoMA’s Ben Model, with an introduction and Q&A by film historians Model and Steve Massa. Registration required.

Film | To Sir, With Love (1967) with Sidney Poitier

Engineer Mark Thackeray arrives to teach a totally undisciplined class of white high school students at an East End school. Still hoping for a good engineering job, he's hopeful that he won't be there long. He starts implementing his own brand of classroom discipline: forcing the pupils to treat each other with respect. Inevitably he begins getting involved in the students' personal lives, and must avoid the advances of an amorous student while winning over the class tough. What will he decide when the engineering job comes through? Director: James Clavell Cast: Sidney Poitier, Judy Geeson, Christian Roberts, Suzy Kendall, Faith Brook Sidney Poitier was a Bahamian and American actor, film director, and diplomat. Screening | Daniel Chester French and The Italian Factor

A screening of the documentary Daniel Chester French: American Sculptor and a preview of a film in progress, The Italian Factor, by filmmaker Eduardo Montes-Bradley. Of the millions of annual visitors to the Lincoln Memorial in the nation’s capital, few know the name of the sculptor, Daniel Chester French (1850-1931), who created its majestic statue of Abraham Lincoln seated. His remarkable life and work are the subject of the film Daniel Chester French: American Sculptor. A leading figure of the American Renaissance, a period of artistic and cultural flourishing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, French designed over 200 monuments celebrating his era's American ideals and heroes. Filmmaker Montes-Bradley explores famous French works such as The Minute Man in Concord, Mass.; Brooklyn's Lafayette Memorial; The Four Continents on the façade of Manhattan's U.S. Custom House; and Boston's Milmore Memorial. The documentary also reveals the close collaboration between French and the Piccirilli brothers, a Bronx-based family of Italian sculptors who realized almost all of French's designs. The stone carvers used traditional techniques to transform artists' plaster or clay models into marble. Through archival footage, interviews, and stunning visuals, the film offers a fascinating portrait of a master artist. The Italian Factor, Montes-Bradley’s upcoming film on the Piccirillis, will focus on the relationship between Italian artists and the American Renaissance.
