Screening | Quilted Steel: Screening and Discussion

Mahogany Browne’s choreopoem Quilted Steel is a visual literary work that brings the critical voices of system-impacted Black women to the stage. The interviews conducted by Priscilla Ocen served as the touchstone for this literary quilting, with a focus on centering the lives and dreams of formerly incarcerated women as a short film featuring actresses Dominique Toney, Yazmin Monet Watkins and Jasmine Williams. This anti-carceral collaboration between writer Mahogany L. Browne and literary organization PEN America is a call to arms. This project demands we interrogate the impact of mass incarceration and honor the human  condition on the road toward abolition. The night will host a premiere of the film, followed by a panel moderated by PEN America Deputy Director Nicole Shawan Junior.

Film | Dear Thomas (2021): A Man Who Overcame Boundaries

Director Andreas Kleinert's Thomas Brasch biopic shows the life and dreams of a man for whom every world was always too small, someone who overcame boundaries and caused damage in the process. 150 min. The film has been nominated for the German Film Awards in 12 categories. "Born in England to Kindertransport refugees who were active Communists - Thomas Brasch came to embody the fault lines of German history like few other artists. As his father Horst Brasch rose in the ranks of East Germany's ruling Socialist Unity Party, Thomas became an uncompromisingly radical writer whose activism led to censorship and three months in prison. After his move to West Germany, he refused to play the role of GDR-dissident and focused his critique on West German society and German history in plays, poetry, and a series of brilliant but challenging films. Although he is highly regarded as a translator of Chekhov's and Shakespeare's works into German, none of Thomas Brasch's major works have ever been published in English. His major films, jarring meditations on German history such as Der Passagier - Welcome to Germany (1988, starring Tony Curtis as a choleric Hollywood director who returns to Germany to make a film about his experience in a concentration camp), are rarely shown in the United States. This spring, LBI, the Goethe-Institut New York, The German Film Office, The German Consulate General in New York, Deutsches Haus at NYU, and the Friends of Freiburg Alumni of North America re-introduce audiences to this remarkable artist and story."

Screening | Sounds & Stories: Femenine (online)

This season’s Sounds & Stories series draws to a close with an account of Femenine, an improvisatory tour de force by the late Julius Eastman, who strove to be “Black to the fullest, a musician to the fullest, [and] a homosexual to the fullest,” and whose take on minimalism was “idiosyncratic and perhaps ahead of its time” (New York Times).

Screening | Dance on Film: Haitian Folkloric Dance (online)

Dance scholar Dr. Dasha A. Chapman curates selections from and speaks about the Haitian folkloric dance materials held at the Library. These moving documents register points on the continuum of Haitian folkloric dance's history, which began with the documentation and staging of Haitian traditional dances in the 1930s and 1940s, and still evolves today with contemporary dance artists. What is Haitian folkloric dance? How was it first developed and how can we understand its more recent trajectories? Who are influential artists in the shaping, teaching, choreographing, and dissemination of the form? What motivates artists to continue shepherding Haitian folkloric dance despite the many social, cultural, and economic barriers to its thriving? Dr. Chapman will answer these questions and more. In this presentation, Chapman will share glimpses into archival footage of the sacred contexts from which this concert dance form derives, folkloric dance classes taught by luminary pedagogues, and performances by renowned companies and choreographers. Some artists featured include Jean-Leon Destine, Viviane Gauthier, Katherine Dunham, Lavinia Williams, Emerante de Pradines Morse, and Odette Weiner.
