Directors: Gene Kelly & Stanley Donen Cast: Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Betty Garrett, Ann Miller, Jules Munshin, Vera-Ellen Gene Kelly was an American dancer, actor, singer, director, and choreographer. He was known for his energetic and athletic dancing style and sought to create a new form of American dance accessible to the general public, which he called "dance for the common man". He starred in, choreographed, and, with Stanley Donen, co-directed some of the best-regarded musical films of the 1940s and 1950s. Frank Sinatra was an American singer and actor. Sinatra is among the world's best-selling music artists with an estimated 150 million record sales. Sinatra forged a highly successful career as a film actor. The celebration will include screening of the documentary of Marcel Proust: A Writer's Life (1993) - a film about the life and work of Marcel Proust with emphasis on his struggle to realize the 3,000 page masterpiece Remembrance of Things Past (A la recherche du temps perdu). Includes archival film footage. Book discussion follows. Alongside figures such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Franz Kafka, Proust shifted literature toward subjective experience. Proust's biggest innovation may actually be his treatment of memory--especially what he called "involuntary memory".
