Screening | Experience what can not be said: A Trilogy of Virtual Reality Films (online)

Gina Kim's virtual reality (VR) trilogy on US military comfort women, the Comfortless Trilogy, has garnered international acclaim ever since the director's first VR film, Bloodless, won the first Best VR story award at the 2017 Venice International Film Festival. The second project, Tearless (2021), further explored Kim's focus on bringing back the silenced voice of the comfort women through the viewer's embodied experience. The final VR film, Comfortless, which premiered at the Venice Immersive 2023, not only completed the trilogy, but also expanded the project's scope through the creation of the extended reality (XR) "American Town," the brothel town near the US Air Force base featured in the VR experience. The AR and XR versions of both Tearless and Comfortless have reached a larger audience beyond the exhibition venues, allowing their users to bring the critical sites of historical trauma into their personal spaces. This event will feature the director's talk on her journey from producing the VR trilogy to her recent experimentations with other reality media.

Screening | Silent Clowns Film Series: Harold Lloyd and Speedy (1928)

Remembered as the "third genius" of silent comedy, Harold Lloyd was first at the box-office in the 1920s. Speedy (1928) is not as well known as Safety Last (1923) or The Freshman (1925), but is equally funny and shows Lloyd at the peak of his cinematic skills. Set in Manhattan, the films boast some still recognizable New York City locations, as well as vanished icons like old Yankee Stadium and Babe Ruth. This was Lloyd's last silent film, and, along with the previous year's The Kid Brother (1927), was a final summing up of his mastery of the silent comedy feature. One of Lloyd's early one-reel shorts opens the program. The Silent Clowns Film Series is New York's longest-running regularly scheduled silent film showcase. The programming reaches the serious film buff by including rarely-screened titles and rare prints, yet it also introduces kids and new audiences to the classics of the silent screen. Screenings feature live piano accompaniment by MoMA's Ben Model, with an introduction and Q&A by film historians Model and Steve Massa. Registration required.

Film | Filmmakers for the Prosecution (2021): Uncovering the Truth for the Nuremberg Trial

Filmmakers for the Prosecution revisits the quest for film evidence that could hold the Nazis accountable at the Nuremberg Trial. The search was led by two American soldiers, Budd and Stuart Schulberg, under the direction of OSS film chief John Ford. The footage they presented in court became part of the official record and continues to shape our understanding of the Holocaust today. Seventy-five years later, French journalist and filmmaker Jean-Christophe Klotz returns to the German salt mines where films were destroyed, uncovers previously unseen footage, and interviews key figures to reveal why the resulting film about the trial--Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today by Stuart Schulberg--was deliberately suppressed by the U.S. Department of War. Klotz's compelling documentary also explores how these pioneering materials were obtained and raises important questions about documentarians' responsibilities to future generations. For ages 18+; contains graphic footage and imagery that may be upsetting to some viewers. Run time: 59 minutes

Screening | Silent Clowns Film Showcase: The Strong Man (1926)

After years in vaudeville, Harry Langdon made his movie debut in 1924, and his career blazed brightly until 1928. Forgotten for many years, today's he's considered one of the era's greatest and most original film clowns. The Strong Man (1926) was the second for his own production company, and is his best-known and most successful starring comedy. It's also the first feature for director Frank Capra, and is the best example of their close collaboration, featuring some of Langdon's most memorable and celebrated comedy set pieces. Although his top stardom ended in 1928, Harry continued to entertain audiences until 1945.
