The Marshall Project’s “We Are Witnesses” explores the American criminal-justice system through interviews with those whose lives have been touched by it. Watch four videos from the project and then hear from the subjects in person. Featuring: - Eduardo Padro, New York State Supreme Court judge (retired) - Sergeant Edwin Raymond, NYPD - Ayana Thomas, formerly incarcerated in the federal prison system - Jennifer Gonnerman (moderator), staff writer at The New Yorker There are 2.2 million people in our jails and prisons; 1 in 115 adults is confined behind bars; our inmate population is four times larger than it was in 1980. “We Are Witnesses,” is an ambitious short film series that offers a very different sort of calculation: the human cost of locking up so many citizens for so many years. The project comprises 19 videos, each between two and six minutes long. Together, the ex-prisoners, police officers, prison guards, judges, and crime victims on screen present a 360-degree portrait of the state of crime and punishment in the United States.

This is a live audio recording of the podcast The Fragmented Whole, as you view and discuss the documentary Kanju. Adapted from 2014 non-fiction novel, The Bright Continent, Nigerian-American author and journalist Dayo Olopade conceptualizes the Yoruba term ‘kanju,’ which loosely translates to doing more with less and thriving under adverse circumstances, to employ a more asset-based as opposed to deficit-based framework for viewing Africa.

Pianist 'Reed' Hansen has been accompanying classes of Martha Graham's technique at The Juilliard School since 1958 and has had an enduring relationship from the early '70's with the Martha Graham School and the Martha Graham Dance Company. Martha Graham chose Hansen as her personal accompanist and considered him "sacrosanct." This beautiful documentary offers a pristine journey through sound and movement, giving overdue credence to the essential contribution that accompanists make to the dance world.

Endless Dreams and Water Between captures a journey across dispersed sites: California, Manhattan and Majorica, held together by epistolary and oceanic exchanges among four fictional female characters who dream aloud about one day gathering in an imaginary place together. The film explores how islands shape our understanding of place in the world through conceptual, spacial, and historical positioning. 70 min. Also showing: Hydra Decapita, 2010, 31 min. - A meta-documentary of an imaginary world based on the concept albums of Detroit based techno duo Drexciya. The myth of Drexciya is based on an underwater country populated by the evolved species of unborn children of pregnant women thrown overboard during the middle-passage of slave ships across the Atlantic. Amidst commenting on globalization, slavery, capitalism and climate change, the film is interrupted by high-contrast tight shots of flickering water, an intentionally abstract depiction of the perspective of the sea looking back at us.

A presentation of unpublished films by Jean Rouch and a discussion with Jean-Pierre Dozon, Valerie Berty, Jaime Berthe, and Catherine Ruelle. To mark the 100-year anniversary of the birth of anthropologist and filmmaker Jean Rouch, this is a selection of unfinished, unpublished films by the filmmaker, including “Monsieur Albert, Prophete” (Cote d’Ivoire, 1962-63) and “Moi fatigué, moi couché” (Niger, 1966-97). These will be presented and discussed by three specialists of Jean Rouch’s work. About half of his oeuvre remained unfinished and unpublished. Rouch was an adherent of improvisation, or “creative disorder” when filming and constructing his works in the editing process. Fluidity and indeterminacy are characteristic of his style, creating a dialogue and tension in his oeuvre between the finished and the unfinished.

The Unanswered Question… In 1973, over the course of six landmark lectures at Harvard University, Leonard Bernstein masterfully tackled the enigmatic meaning of music and defined for a generation a new way to listen. He titled his epic series The Unanswered Question. 50 years later, the Library presents a contemporary reaction, re-evaluation of Bernstein’s Norton Lectures. Lecture excerpts that capture Bernstein’s theories about musical “linguistics” and music in the future will be tested against contemporary perspectives by living composers and performers that work with ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble). Live performances or archival recordings of new music will either affirm, challenge, or revise Bernstein’s claims.

The Saline: In the Net highlights the corruption that threatens to destroy one of the most important bird habitats in Europe, the Ulcinj Solana in the far south of Montenegro. The suitability of Ulcinj Solana as a habitat for migratory birds actually depends on human-driven salt production, which maintains nutrient-rich waters that serve as fertile ground for many avian species. This documentary investigates the economic and ecological concerns that imperil this vital stronghold of biodiversity. 38 min. From Gulf to Gulf to Gulf is a vast, undulating, and musical spatio-temporal journey through the Western Indian Ocean and a result of four years of dialogue, friendship and Exchange between CAMP and a group of sailors from the Gulf of Kutch who make and sail boats. They also make videos, sometimes with songs married to them. The film follows the physical crossings through the gulfs of Kutch, Persia, and Aden made by oversized wooden vessels that still today enable a vital order of a “world-trade," a kind the moves perpendicular to the phenomena of both piracy and sanctions. 83 min.

After the screening, director Jenny McQuaile and Meredith Rollins, editor in chief of Redbook magazine, will discuss topics addressed in Straight/Curve.

Filmmakers don’t always get it right when they put jazz into their films, but when they do, it should be celebrated. You’ll see Benny Goodman with his quartet and big band in Hollywood Hotel (1937), Nat King Cole in The Blue Gardenia (1953), Duke Ellington in Murder at the Vanities (1934), and much more.
