This documentary is an exploration of a Parisian building that is layered with the memories of human lives. Zylberman reconstituted the stories of most of the families who lived at 209 Saint-Maur through interviews with children who survived the war. Through roundups and deportation during the German occupation, the terror of hiding and final return to light: the evocative power of the film transforms history into a palpable experience. Although the past and its mixture of mourning, loss and survival may resurface, it can never be recovered. 90 min.

An oral history film done with a twist: architects reflect on their initiations into the culture of architecture education in a kind of ritual performance. Asked to recall vivid memories and relevant experiences from their education, they perform a few physical actions and tell their stories. Although filmed in front of a neutral background, specificities quickly emerge: a wide range of responses are juxtaposed, revealing essential preoccupations within three generations of architects. This is not just text as information: you see the person and you hear their story. 53 min.

Started in 1975, Metropolis Video was formed by a group of young filmmakers working in and around Manhattan Cable TV's Public Access Department. Working with one of the earliest live-switched multi-camera systems and small sound mixers, the group adopted a verité shooting style that mirrored the intensity and exuberance of the musicians, and together they captured breakout early performances by Talking Heads, Heartbreakers, Tuff Darts, and several other groups. The screening includes the world premiere of several songs from a recently discovered and digitally restored fall 1975 performance by Talking Heads at CBGB (music club in East Village). The first jazz recordings were made by The Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1917. Today we’re much more likely to be celebrating the birthdays of three great jazz artists, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk, all of them born in 1917. Happily, there is great film footage for all three, documenting their youthful as well as their mature moments as performers.
