The Times' A.O. Scott says viewers “will find solace, enlightenment and surprise in João Moreira Salles’s In the Intense Now, a bittersweet, ruminative documentary essay composed of footage from the era of the 1960s, accompanied by thoughtful, disarmingly personal voice-over narration. Some of the images — and virtually the only ones in color — come from Mr. Salles’s own archives… and they punctuate a main narrative devoted to the ‘events of May’ in France. Mr. Salles offers both fresh visual material and a gently revisionist interpretation of events.” 127 min.

Frank and Simone have fulfilled their dream and live with their two children in a townhouse in the suburbs. They are a happy couple until the day Frank is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. The family is suddenly confronted with death. The time to say goodbye is short, which makes the situation all the more difficult for Frank. Director Andreas Dresen conveys through this moving and yet unsentimental drama how people cope with this problem in isolation and within the family circle, at home rather than in a hospital or hospice. It is inspired by experiences with people from his immediate surroundings. What’s special about this film is that he directs his attention where others either look away, hide behind metaphors or blur reality. It premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Prize of Un Certain Regard. In German with English subtitles.

A presentation of unpublished films by Jean Rouch and a discussion with Jean-Pierre Dozon, Valerie Berty, Jaime Berthe, and Catherine Ruelle. To mark the 100-year anniversary of the birth of anthropologist and filmmaker Jean Rouch, this is a selection of unfinished, unpublished films by the filmmaker, including “Monsieur Albert, Prophete” (Cote d’Ivoire, 1962-63) and “Moi fatigué, moi couché” (Niger, 1966-97). These will be presented and discussed by three specialists of Jean Rouch’s work. About half of his oeuvre remained unfinished and unpublished. Rouch was an adherent of improvisation, or “creative disorder” when filming and constructing his works in the editing process. Fluidity and indeterminacy are characteristic of his style, creating a dialogue and tension in his oeuvre between the finished and the unfinished.

Black Ballerina tells the story of several black women from different generations who fell in love with ballet. Six decades ago, Joan Myers Brown, Delores Browne, and Raven Wilkinson faced racism in pursuit of careers in classical dance. Today, young dancers of color continue to face formidable challenges breaking into the overwhelmingly white world of ballet. Moving back and forth in time, this lyrical, character-driven film shows how far we still have to go and stimulates a fresh discussion about race, inclusion, and opportunity across all sectors of American society.\ 57 min.

This film tells the story of a group of women in rural Veracruz, who more than twenty years ago began cooking and delivering meals for Central American migrants travelling on the top of the freight trains that make up La Bestia. Since then, these women have not only been providing food to migrants in precarious situations, but have transformed their kitchen into a political space. Las Patronas have learned how to talk about Mexico’s problems, poverty in the countryside, human rights, society’s indifference towards migrants and about their own rights as women. Following the documentary screening, a panel discussion will take place featuring Javier García, the documentary director, and producers Ana Paula Uruñuela and Iliana Martínez, chaired by Alexandra Délano.
