This staff-led tour highlights the major collectors and magicians linked to New York City from the 1870s to the 1930s. About the Exhibition: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a surge of magicians began to refine their art, finding larger audiences and building communities of practice, especially in New York City. This period has come to be known as the Golden Age of Magic. The history of magic and magicians has long been documented through text and image as a form of theater. Now, the exhibition Mystery and Wonder: A Legacy of Golden Age Magicians in New York City, curated by Annemarie van Roessel, will display our rich and historic archival materials related to the art of magic and the fascinating lives of magicians performing in New York City during the Golden Age.

Concert | Alt-Rock, Lo-Fi, & Indie Music in the Park (+ Music Panel Pre-Show Discussion)

Enjoy a concert from three different music groups: Black Country, New Road, Horsegirl, and Sharp Pins. Black Country, New Road is a sextet of classically trained musicians who've created a unique blend of jazz, math rock, and klezmer that turned the Brixton post-rock scene on its head even as live music took an extended pause during the pandemic. They're joined by Horsegirl, a New York-via-Chicago trio that takes musical cues from '90s alt rockers; their latest LP Phonetics On and On was produced by the eccentric Welsh artist Cate Le Bon. Rounding out the bill is Sharp Pins, the lo-fi power pop solo project from Kai Slater of the post-punk group Lifeguard, who hail from the same youthful Chicago rock scene that produced Horsegirl, formed while they were still in high school. 4:00 PM PRE-SHOW PANEL: WHAT DOES "INDIE" MEAN TODAY? Book Club | New York Times Writer Shares His New Book, Dining Out: First Dates, Defiant Nights, and Last Call Disco Fries at America's Gay Restaurants (In Person AND Online!)

In this conversation about Dining Out: First Dates, Defiant Nights, and Last Call Disco Fries at America's Gay Restaurants, author Erik Piepenburg takes attendees on a culinary tour of spaces filled with joy, sex, sorrow, activism, and nostalgia, joined by colleagues from the food world: Telly Justice, Camille Lindsley, and Florent Morellet. Dining Out explores how gay people came of age, came out, and fought for their rights not just in gay bars or the streets, but in restaurants. From cruisy urban cafeterias of the 1920s to mom-and-pop diners that fed the Stonewall generation to the intersectional hotspots of the early 21st century. Using archival material, original reporting, interviews, and first-person accounts, Erik Piepenburg explores how LGBTQ restaurants shaped and continue to shape generations of gay Americans.
