Festival | Procession Celebrating the Festival of San Juan: Dancing & Singing

Attend a unique celebration of the Afro-Venezuelan tradition of honoring San Juan. Participate in a "walking procession": the collaborative ritual of dancing and singing to the beat of drums. The Festival of San Juan was originally a communal practice by enslaved people in the cocoa and coffee plantations in the Caribbean coasts of Venezuela. Though it has been celebrated in Venezuela for hundreds of years and celebrates the summer solstice and the birth of Saint John the Baptist, modern participation in San Juan often acts as a statement of self and pride. This recentering of San Juan in New York City is led by Willie Quintana, director of the Brooklyn musical collective Tambor y Cana. By bringing together historical touchstones, national affiliation, and personal identity, Tambor y Cana acts as a catalyst for a meaningful appreciation of and fresh engagement with Afro-Venezuelan culture.

With everything from a crowned King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, fantastical sea creatures and mer-folk, marching bands and dancing groups, to baby strollers and mechanized floats, it showcases the creativity of individuals from the five boroughs and beyond. It opens the summer with a true celebration of incredible art, NYC's entrepreneurial spirit, and our community pride. It also ensures a successful summer season by drawing hundreds of thousands of people to the amusement area, providing an economic boost to local businesses.

Galleries | Artist Talk with MoMA Curator on the Visual Codes of Nationality

Enjoy a talk on the exhibition Anna Barlik: Flags of Non-Existent Countries, with artist Anna Barlik and Paula Vilaplana de Miguel, Curatorial Associate at MoMA. The artist’s new series lending title to the exhibition is a series of formal compositions that engage the visual codes of nationality while critically reinterpreting them. The starting point is the flag, as one of the most recognizable symbols of unity, identity and political belonging. In Barlik’s work, such order becomes destabilized — colors that are assigned to certain countries or places become re-ordered, deconstructured, and reconfigured, creating visual marks, or speculative emblems, for countries that have never existed. In these works, these colors are changed into softer and different - less obvious tones. By moving away from their usual forms, the works ask how symbols gain meaning and power, and encourage viewers to look again at ideas often seen as fixed or natural.

Dance Performance | Trsnfixing Flamenco Solo with Live Music

See the New York Premiere of The Disappearing Act, which explores flamenco’s roots, shining a light on the Afro-descendant populations in southern Spain who shaped the genre. Born in London to a family from Ghana and Jamaica, British flamenco artist Yinka Esi Graves’ travels to Andalusia to study the art form exposed her to a wide array of cultures, an experience this performance brings vividly to life. In this transfixing solo with live music, Graves transforms the act of disappearing into a moving artistic gesture.

Play | Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet: Broadway & Film Actors in a Timeless Tale of Starcrossed Lovers (Sign Language)

Never was there a story of more woe, or more romance, than the Bard’s timeless tale of two young lovers from warring families. As the Montagues and Capulets are torn apart by ideology and simmering violence spills into the streets of the border town of Verona, Romeo and Juliet dare to defy a world determined to keep them apart. In this bold new staging, the play unfolds in English, but Romeo and Juliet speak to one another in Spanish, a language reserved only for their shared world. Don’t miss this thrilling new production, essential viewing for lovers of Shakespeare, theater, and the enduring power of love itself. Written by William Shakespeare Directed by Saheem Ali Cast: Ra'Mya Latiah Aikens, Sergio Mauritz Ang (TV: Crutch, Law & Order: SVU), Daniel Bravo Hernández (Broadway: Romeo + Juliet), Reece dos Santos, Caleb Joshua Eberhardt (Broadway: An Enemy of the People, Choir Boy), Glenn Fleshler (Broadway: Good Night, and Good Luck, Death of a Salesman, Arcadia, Guys and Dolls, Spring Awakening; Film: Joker, A Most Violent Year; TV: Billions, Barry, True Detective, Boardwalk Empire), Francis Jue (Tony, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel, and Obie Awards for Yellow Face)
