Film | Live By Night (2016): Action Drama Starring Ben Affleck

Taking fatherly advice is not in Joe Coughlin's nature. Instead, the WWI vet is a selfproclaimed anti-establishment outlaw, despite being the son of the Boston Police Deputy Superintendent. Joe's not all bad, though; in fact, he's not really bad enough for the life he's chosen. Unlike the gangsters he refuses to work for, he has a sense of justice and an open heart, and both work against him, leaving him vulnerable time and again--in business and in love. Director: Ben Affleck Cast: Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper Ben Affleck is an American actor and filmmaker who gained wide recognition when he and Matt Damon won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for writing Good Will Hunting (1997), which they also starred in. Opening Reception | In a Free State: Multi-Media Group Exhibition on This "Fraught Moment"

Experience the group exhibition, In a Free State, which brings together artworks by twenty-two artists working across media. For this exhibition, curators drew from their circle of close friends, connected with artists we have long admired, and reached out to younger voices that they are excited about. They looked for work that somehow gave them insight into this fraught moment, where the structures of trust—from the interpersonal to the political—have collapsed. Although the works in the exhibition were not all created in response to or during this precarious moment, each of them, and the practices that surround them, felt to the curators as a viable way to visualize and contend with a chaotic and alienating time. The breadth of this presentation channels the lyricism and poetry of painting, as well as a labyrinth of objects, curious textures, and moving images. Dark deities and monolithic figures coexist with urgent calls to action in a post-apocalyptic circuitry of politics and art. Earthy materials masquerade as protective metallic shells, and a search for power and sensuality ends in bodies pushed beyond the limit. The stakes for each artist in the show are different—some work in close proximity to war, some have families living in regions marked by upheaval and displacement, some are citizens in opposition to their governments, and some engage with the high costs of coping in a turbulent society—yet they all made us understand some aspect about the impossibility of this time. Running through the show are threads of absurd humor and morbid imagery, but inside these critical views of our human condition are sensorial wishes for things to be different, and a belief in our ability to imagine through making.

Opening Reception | Metamorphosis: Solo Painting Exhibition Exploring Spontaneous Visions

Metamorphosis is an exhibition of Farah Atassi’s new body of work. Across these eight paintings, transformed forms abound, deconstructed through a liberation of mind and brushstroke. Each work represents a dream, distinct, spontaneous visions tied delicately together through shared preoccupations and formal choices. Clouds act as guides, leading the eye from one canvas to the next. In the verdant still life The Pears and the Clouds, they take a rest, improbably set on tables like any other sundry item. Atassi is interested in the ambiguous materiality of clouds and their fluctuating nature, as well as compositional hierarchies. Long relegated to the background of paintings, she recast clouds as central characters.
