Classical Music | Renaissance & Baroque Chamber Works (In Person AND Online!)

Abendmusik, New York's Early Music String Band, explores passaggi by Dalla Casa, Rognoni, Bassano, and the Spanish composer Ortiz. In the 16th and early 17th centuries, musicians loved to show off their ability to improvise and embellish fancy motifs called passaggi, breaking of divisions, or diferencias by adding expressive and technically challenging ornamentation to vocal works. Opening Reception | Notice of a Citizen: Mixed Media Political Exhibition on Presidential Performance

Jill Magid's Notice of a Citizen considers the ambiguous relationship between a citizen and the presidency through a series of sculptures, neon works, and drawings. The exhibition draws on the forms, language, and objects that structure public appearances in the White House Rose Garden - historically referred to as "the people's garden." Notice of a Citizen anticipates the release of the artist's career-spanning monograph, With Full Consent. In Notice of a Citizen, Magid stages five decades of presidential performance as a single theatrical event, and the Rose Garden's ubiquitous, yet shifting image - so resonant in the American imagination - is made visible as a construction.

Opening Reception | Terms of Consumption: Solo Oil Painting Exhibition Emphasizing Visual Seduction

See new oil paintings by New Hampshire-based artist Danielle Fretwell with his exhibition, Terms of Consumption. It will feature a suite of still lifes that further develop the artist’s inquiry into the perception of truth and illusion. Fretwell imbues the genre of still life painting with a contemporary urgency, combining a skillful use of painting, photography, and printmaking techniques to pose questions about what is seen and obscured. Her paintings are frequently split by two compositional elements: precisely rendered still lifes – replete with an abundance of fruits, desserts, and tableware – are juxtaposed with abstract fields of color and texture, which the artist describes as veils. Evoking the sensuous allure of Dutch Golden Age banquet scenes, Fretwell’s still lifes are forthcoming in their power to entice, their immersive bird’s-eye views and characteristically dim settings emphasizing their visual seduction. By contrast, the veils keep a portion of the scenes out of view, whether in the form of obstructive barriers or dramatic shadows. This inherent discord highlights the handmade construction of each image, inspiring reflection on truth and deception against the backdrop of our increasingly artificial visual culture.

Play | Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet: Broadway & Film Actors in a Timeless Tale of Starcrossed Lovers

Never was there a story of more woe, or more romance, than the Bard’s timeless tale of two young lovers from warring families. As the Montagues and Capulets are torn apart by ideology and simmering violence spills into the streets of the border town of Verona, Romeo and Juliet dare to defy a world determined to keep them apart. In this bold new staging, the play unfolds in English, but Romeo and Juliet speak to one another in Spanish, a language reserved only for their shared world. Don’t miss this thrilling new production, essential viewing for lovers of Shakespeare, theater, and the enduring power of love itself.
