Opera | Screening of Philip Glass's Satyagraha: Modern Opera in a Park


Satyagraha ("insistence on truth") is a 1979 opera by the revolutionary American composer Philip Glass. It depicts scenes from the life of Mahatma Gandhi as he developed his philosophy of non-violent resistance in South Africa between 1896 and 1913. The work forms the second part of Glass's "Portrait Trilogy" of operas about men who changed the world, which also includes Einstein on the Beach and Akhnaten. This is a screening of an HD recording of the Met Opera 2011 production directed by Phelim McDermott. It features towering puppets and striking tableaux created with everyday materials such as newspaper and corrugated tin. Tenor Richard Croft gives a moving performance as Gandhi. Conducted by Dante Anzolini. First-come, first-seated, starting one hour before the concert. All guests (aged 12+) are required to provide proof of full vaccination OR a negative COVID-19 test, taken within 72 hours of the event. All guests (aged 2+) must wear a face covering.

Set in South Harlem, amidst a vibrant and eclectic community of West African immigrants, This adaptation of The Merry Wives of Windsor is a New York story about tricks of the heart, performed in the heart of the city. A raucous spinoff featuring the Bard's most beloved comic characters, this hilarious farce tells the story of the trickster Falstaff and the wily wives who outwit him in a new celebration of Black joy, laughter, and vitality.
