Classical Music | Beethoven's 'Kreutzer' Sonata (virtual, streaming until Sep 3)

Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9, Op. 47, is an 1803 sonata for piano and violin notable for its technical difficulty, unusual length (around 40 minutes), and emotional scope. It is commonly known as the Kreutzer Sonata after the finest violinist of the day Rodolphe Kreutzer, to whom it was ultimately dedicated, but who thoroughly disliked the piece and refused to play it. The sonata was originally dedicated to the violinist George Bridgetower (1778-1860) who had premiered the work with Beethoven. After the premiere performance, Beethoven and Bridgetower fell out: while the two were drinking, Bridgetower apparently insulted the morals of a woman whom Beethoven cherished. Enraged, Beethoven removed the dedication of the piece, dedicating it instead to Rodolphe Kreutzer. Enjoy the recording of the work from the Salzburg Festival in 2012.

Symposium | The Lives of Images (livestream)

This multi-day symposium to take up some key issues addressed in the first two volumes of the book The Lives of Images. It explores the roles, histories, and contemporary uses of reproducible images in relation to specific grounding themes. To speak of the reproducible image in this moment is to address not only photographs, film, and videos, but screen prints and billboards; GIFs, memes, and emojis—a wide array of technically mediated scripto-visual forms that together constitute and remake both our visual landscape and image economies. The Lives of Images aims to gather together recent and contemporary scholarship that helps to animate and inform a rich dialogue on the role of the image in contemporary culture. Both the series and the symposium will engage theorists, scholars, and artists whose practices move fluidly between a focus on still and moving images. Symposium discussions will range across an array of uses of reproducible images that include, but regularly extend beyond, traditional fine art. August 31-September 2, 2021

Opera | Screening of Marnie: Classic Thriller in a Park

American composer Nico Muhly has received commissions from The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cambridge and others. He has written works for the concert stage, Broadway and screen (Oscar winner The Reader). Muhly's Marnie, based on Winston Graham's gripping 1961 novel of intrigue and deception which has also been adapted as a film by Alfred Hitchcock, was staged by the Metropolitan Opera during the 2018-19 season. In this performance, mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard stars in the elusive title role, a young con woman who employs myriad false identities until she meets her match in the imperious Mark Rutland, sung by baritone Christopher Maltman. Director Michael Mayer's cinematic production bursts to life in vivid color and features ravishing, '60s-inspired costumes by Oscar-nominated designer Arianne Phillips. Robert Spano conducts. First-come, first-seated, starting one hour before the concert. All guests (aged 12+) are required to provide proof of full vaccination OR a negative COVID-19 test, taken within 72 hours of the event. All guests (aged 2+) must wear a face covering.
