Play | So Sad, So Sexy: The Unstable Woman Trope

Drawing inspiration from contemporary Internet culture and narratives around mental illness, as well as accounts of Victorian insane asylums and 1940s-era celebrity scandals, So Sad, So Sexy is a devised play exploring Western culture’s ongoing fascination with, and misrepresentation of, depressed and unstable women. Through the overlapping stories of three characters--Lucy, a Victorian-era asylum patient; Madeline, a Film Noir starlet, and Izzy, a modern-day “Internet sad girl”--the piece crosses time and circumstance to reflect the parallels between each period’s approach to mental health, gender politics, and the personal and collective identities we create.

City Walk | Battery Park City: 'Green Guidelines', Teardrop Park and More

The tour covers the north residential neighborhood of Battery Park City, built mostly after 2001 to mandatory "green guidelines." It was developed in several phases, beginning with Stuyvesant High School at the northeast edge and the esplanade and Rockefeller Park along the Hudson. A diagonal avenue lined with apartment buildings creates one face of the neighborhood, while the inner courts of the large blocks are connected by the delightful Teardrop Park, designed by experts in sustainability, soil toxicity, and waterfront infrastructure, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. Explore this small park which concentrates landscape architecture into a miniature world. Tour duration is around 60 minutes.
