City Walk | Battery Park City: 'Green Guidelines', Teardrop Park and More

The tour covers the north residential neighborhood of Battery Park City, built mostly after 2001 to mandatory "green guidelines." It was developed in several phases, beginning with Stuyvesant High School at the northeast edge and the esplanade and Rockefeller Park along the Hudson. A diagonal avenue lined with apartment buildings creates one face of the neighborhood, while the inner courts of the large blocks are connected by the delightful Teardrop Park, designed by experts in sustainability, soil toxicity, and waterfront infrastructure, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. Explore this small park which concentrates landscape architecture into a miniature world. Tour duration is around 60 minutes.

Opening Reception | Humankind, Be Both: Art That Questions Our World

The debut solo exhibition by multimedia artist Sandro Madsen. As we re-enter life post pandemic lockdown, Sandro imagines ways we can recreate and celebrate our humanity, the marks people make on our city, the unseen energy, ‘the force’ that binds us. Through the use of geometric shapes and straight lines without dictation, sans use of any straight edge or rulers, and the contrast of free-flowing energy that takes shape and forms organically as a result of these straight lines coming together, Sandro’s work becomes a way of questioning the attitudes, fears, and rules which have formed the environment around us and our behaviors within it.

Author Reading | American Estrangement: Stories of Internal Struggle (virtual)

Said Sayrafiezadeh's new collection of stories--some of which have appeared in The New Yorker, Paris Review, and The Best American Short Stories--is set in a contemporary America full of the kind of emotionally bruised characters familiar to readers of Denis Johnson and George Saunders. These are people contending with internal struggles--a son's fractured relationship with his father, the death of a mother, the loss of a job, drug addiction--even as they are battered by larger, often invisible, economic, political, and racial forces of American society.

Play | Under Woodside: A Typical Day in Queens

What’s a typical day in Queens? A new poetic prose play ponders this question. Sunnyside resident Juliann Lavallee’s newest work, Under Woodside, uses inspiration from the 1954 Dylan Thomas poem "Under Milk Wood" to depict a single day within a few borough blocks. Directed by Bryna Kearney, Under Woodside feels like a long-awaited, post-Covid group hug. It strives to capture NYC’s flavor in a way that resonates with natives, transplants, and vacationers.

Lecture | The Psychotic Method: A Lecture/Performance

Writer and critic Geoffrey Mak will deliver a lecture/performance in the form of a guided meditation. “How do you move forward when all you have are questions without answers? When you know there’s a bigger picture, but you’ll never know what that bigger picture is?” considers Mak. “The salient task of psychosis—as affect, as method—is locating information in places of transition from one reality to the next.”

Broder's language is entirely her own, marked both by brutal strangeness and raw intimacy. At turns essayistic and surreal, bouncing between the grotesque and the transcendent, Superdoom is a must-have for longtime fans and the perfect introduction to one of our most brilliant and original poets.
