Slide Lecture | Benjamin Britten in America: Music History About The Leading British Composer of the 20th Century (Zoom)

In April 1939, composer Benjamin Britten travelled across the Atlantic on the rather luxurious SS Ausonia to try his fortune in the US. Accompanying him was someone who had recently become a close friend, the singer Peter Pears. They began their journey as two friends with return tickets and a plan for Britten to get work in Hollywood after a brief stay on the east coast. The trip turned out almost entirely differently for them both: within a few weeks Britten and Pears became lovers, Hollywood didn't work out at all, and the short visit to the east coast lasted for nearly three years.. Learn about Britten's time in the US during the war, his great success with his compositions premiering at Carnegie Hall (Violin Concerto, Sinfonia da Requiem), his person life and more with a music historian.

Park Walk | Tide Deck Tour

The design of the park's Pier 26 is inspired by the Manhattan shoreline that would have existed prior to Henry Hudson's 1609 expedition. The pier includes a series of ecological communities representing this native landscape, including from a woodland forest to the rocky tidal zone and the Hudson River itself. One of the most unique of these native coastal environments is a manufactured rocky tidal marsh, the Tide Deck which is located on the western end of the Pier. The Tide Deck and its marsh plants ebb and flood with our daily tidal cycle, and features many interesting habitat enhancements including tide pools. Take a socially distant tour on the Tide Deck walkway. Staff will talk about this special environment. Please note that COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place for this event.
