Book Discussion | Doing the Right Thing: How Colleges and Universities Can Undo Systemic Racism in Faculty Hiring (online)

Marybeth Gasman's book is an honest confrontation of systemic racism in faculty hiring--and what to do about it. While colleges and universities have been lauded for increasing student diversity, these same institutions have failed to achieve any comparable diversity among their faculty. Relying on national data and interviews with provosts, deans, and department chairs from sixty major universities, Gasman documents the institutional forces stymieing faculty diversification, and she makes the case for how such deficiencies can and should be rectified.

Film | Grey Gardens (1975): Iconic Documentary, Q&A, Reception

Albert and David Maysles' iconic 1975 documentary Gray Gardens took the film-making world by storm and spawned a number of other cinematic works, books, and a Broadway musical! It is a fly-on-the-wall look at the lives of two eccentric aristocrats (cousins of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis), mother and daughter both named Edith Beale, in their decayed mansion in East Hampton, Long Island. In 2010, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Handyman who assisted the Beale's in curbing the chaos of their home in the 1970s, Jerry Torre (nicknamed Jerry the Marble Faun) will be present to make some comments and take questions following the screening. Then, join a drink reception in the courtyard where Jerry's sculptures are exhibited. In addition, Jerry's own autobiographical book, The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens, will be available for sale and signing. Proof of full vaccination is required. Face-coverings are optional.

Concert | Israeli Singer Channels Iranian Pop

An Israeli singer, already a well-known actress in her homeland, writes her songs in Farsi, the language of her native nation of Iran. It is a country where, as a singer, she is unwelcome, regardless of her popularity. While her 2019 single "Zan Bezan (Women, Sing)" lyrically channels the tradition of powerful Iranian pop musicians such as Googoosh and Ramesh, her compositions encompass both Eastern instrumentation and Western electronic house beats and synths. For this glamorous and exciting live performer, simply to take the stage is a political act. Please note: They recommend arriving 20 minutes before the performance, and will begin seating standby guests 5 minutes before start time. While they'll do their best to accommodate as many guests as possible, they cannot guarantee admission.

Concert | Sunny Jain: A Blend of Bollywood, Indian Folk, Jazz and Psychedelic Guitars

Sunny Jain's album Wild Wild East encompasses myriad facets of Jain's identity both as a first-generation South Asian-American and as a global musician, from his own family's immigration story to his eclectic musical upbringing. In recasting the immigrant -- steeped in the courage to leave a familiar homeland for a new beginning -- as the modern-day cowboy and cowgirl, Jain sources musical inspiration from the scores of Bollywood classics and Spaghetti Westerns, Indian folk traditions, jazz improvisation, and rollicking psychedelic and surf guitar styles. Composer/drummer Sunny Jain is most known for founding the band Red Baraat, a frenzied fusion of bhangra, hip-hop, jazz, rock, and sheer, unbridled energy that NPR has called "the best party band in years."
