Classical Music | Herbert von Karajan, The Berlin Philharmonic: Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (virtual, streaming until Aug 20)

In this film from 1973, Herbert von Karajan leads the preeminent Berlin Philharmonic with soloist Alexis Weissenberg in Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 live at the Berlin Philharmonie. Generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) was a dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death. By one estimate, he was the top-selling classical music recording artist of all time, having sold an estimated 200 million records. Praised by Herbert von Karajan as "one of the best pianists of our time," Alexis Weissenberg (1929-2012) was a Bulgarian-born French pianist. He had performed with the Israel Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and more.

Established in 1972, this art museum's permanent collection consists of around 10,000 items, over 6,000 of which are documents and objects related to the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs, some of which are on long-term display.

Talk | Ships of Stone: Concrete Shipbuilding from the World Wars to Today (virtual)

Concrete may seem like an odd material for shipbuilding, but during World War I, severe shortages of steel led to this innovation. Devised by Norwegian immigrants the Fougner brothers, they built one of the first such ships in the US at their shipyard in Flushing, Queens. The technology reached its apex during World War II, when the US built over 100 ships and barges, and they were used as freighters, tankers, and even floating ice cream factories. Large-scale concrete shipbuilding is a thing of the past, but they will examine the fates of these wartime ships, and discuss many examples of concrete boatbuilding today.

Movie in a Park | Summer of Soul (2021): Music Film with Performances by Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone and More

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary--part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was largely forgotten-until now. Summer of Soul shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present. The feature includes concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and more. Proof of vaccination required.

Author Reading | The Indispensables: The Diverse Soldier-Mariners Who Shaped the Country, Formed the Navy, and Rowed Washington Across the Delaware (virtual)

On the stormy night of August 29, 1776, the Continental Army faced capture or annihilation after losing the Battle of Brooklyn. The fate of the Revolution rested upon the shoulders of the soldier-mariners from Marblehead, Massachusetts, who saved the army by navigating the treacherous waters of the river the Manhattan. White, Black, Hispanic, and Native American, this uniquely diverse group of soldiers set an inclusive standard the US Army would not reach again for more than 170 years. Author Patrick O’Donnell discusses how the Marbleheaders repeatedly altered the course of events during the Revolution—from forming the elite Guard that protected General Washington to ferrying Continental forces across the Delaware River on Christmas night of 1776.
