Dance Performance | New York City Ballet: Balanchine's Vienna Waltzes (virtual, streaming for 24 hours)

New York City Ballet presents Balanchine's Vienna Waltzes. Created in 1977 and set to waltzes by Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehar, and Richard Strauss, this work of grand scale features more than 50 dancers. Through Rouben Ter-Arutunian's evolving scenery, Ronald Bates' lighting, and Karinska's costumes, the last that the famed designer created for the Company, the ballet transforms from a sylvan forest glen to a dance hall to a glittering society cafe to, at last, a majestic mirrored ballroom. This performance was filmed in 2013 and features Rebecca Krohn, Tyler Angle, Megan Fairchild, Anthony Huxley, Erica Pereira, Sean Suozzi, Teresa Reichlen, Ask la Cour, Maria Kowroski and Jared Angle in the principal roles. The streaming will be available until Jun 17th.

Museums | (IN-PERSON) Dutch Masterpieces: Paintings by Rembrandt, Hals, and Vermeer

Dutch paintings of the 17th century: the Golden Age of Rembrandt, Hals, and Vermeer. Through sixty-seven works of art organized thematically, In Praise of Painting orients visitors to key issues in 17th century Dutch culture--from debates about religion and conspicuous consumption to painters' fascination with the domestic lives of women. The presentation also provides the opportunity to conserve and display rarely exhibited paintings, including Margareta Haverman's A Vase of Flowers--one of only two known paintings by the artist. The exhibition takes its title from one of the period's major works of art theory, Philips Angel's The Praise of Painting (1642), a pioneering defense of realism in art.

Talk | Algerian Women and Their War Stories (virtual)

An online conversation examining the political importance of women's war stories to Algerian society and the post-colonial state Amongst the most iconic images of the Algerian War/Algerian Revolution 1954-62 are those of women in the National Liberation Front: women in the rural guerrilla, women planting bombs during “the Battle of Algiers”, women on put trial in French military courts. Such imagery reflects (some) of the roles of Algerian women during the conflict. It also reveals the political importance of having a story to tell about women in the war to the nationalist movement, the post-colonial state and Algerian society more broadly – a narrative which often makes little space for the multiplicity of women’s voices and experiences. In her talk, Natalya Vince will explore the production of a dominant iconography and language to talk about women’s wartime role(s) and the different political uses to which this has been put by both the wartime and subsequent generations. This includes examining how women veterans themselves recount and relate to their wartime stories, and their place within the national story.
