Working directly from Yoko Ono's 1964 artist's book Grapefruit, Patricia Voulgaris will be performing from two specific event scores featured in Grapefruit using everyday materials. The interactive workshop will encourage participants to create their own score performance. Using scores as a jumping off point, participants will explore performance art through their own practice. Lecture | Pre-code Hollywood and the Career of Norma Shearer (Zoom)

The period between the advent of talking pictures in the late 1920s and the enforcement of the Hays Code in July 1934 is commonly known as the “pre-Code” era, a time of relatively unrestrained filmmaking during which Hollywood’s producers, directors and stars were able to explore adult topics in a way that would not again become possible until the mid-1960s. This talk will explore this time period, focusing on the mechanisms which led to the enforcement of censorship in mid-1934, but also on the possibilities offered to particularly female stars during the previous five years. Oscar winner Norma Shearer, a Canadian who arrived in Hollywood in 1923, offers a fascinating lens for a study of female stardom during the pre-Code era. Happily married to MGM wunderkind Irving G. Thalberg, she became famous for her performances in films such as The Divorcee (Leonard, 1930), Strangers May Kiss (Fitzmaurice, 1931) and A Free Soul (Brown, 1931), in which she played liberated women, often with successful careers, who embodied a complex relationship with the institution of marriage and all it meant for women.
