Discussion | Trauma’s Field of Distortion (virtual)

Indeed, history may be written by the victors, yet the present and immediate past are constantly being rewritten or repictured by victims, witnesses and perpetrators of violence in ways large and small. The Indian novelist Megha Majumdar, the Ethiopian-American writer and photographer Maaza Mengiste, and the German-Lebanese novelist and slam poet Pierre Jarawan join Tess Lewis to discuss their latest novels and the distorting effects trauma and shame exert on individual and collective identities.

Park Walk | (IN-PERSON, outdoors) Tide Deck Tour

The design of the park's Pier 26 is inspired by the Manhattan shoreline that would have existed prior to Henry Hudson's 1609 expedition. The pier includes a series of ecological communities representing this native landscape, including from a woodland forest to the rocky tidal zone and the Hudson River itself. One of the most unique of these native coastal environments is a manufactured rocky tidal marsh, the Tide Deck which is located on the western end of the Pier. The Tide Deck and its marsh plants ebb and flood with our daily tidal cycle, and features many interesting habitat enhancements including tide pools. Take a socially distant tour on the Tide Deck walkway. Staff will talk about this special environment. Please note that COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place for this event.

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: Alanna Fields (Zoom)

To commemorate the final day of 2020 Workspace Resident Alanna Fields’ exhibition, Baxter St is pleased to host an artist-on-artist conversation between Fields and artist and former Workspace Resident Elliott Jerome Brown Jr.  The pieces in Mirages of Dreams Past build upon Fields’s acclaimed recent series Audacity (2019-20) and As We Were (2019), in which wax served as a means to seal and memorialize Black queer life and visually address how it has historically been obscured and concealed. In the new works, however, the wax begins to frame rather than conceal: nature, vibrant interiors, and images of home come into focus.

Workshop | Intro Class on Acupressure Essentials: Opening Energy Channels to Boost Health and Well-Being (virtual)

According to traditional Chinese medicine, there is a network of channels ("meridians") running through the human body in which Qi - our life force, circulates. Along these channels, there are key "acupoints," focal points at specific locations on these energetic pathways that, if stimulated in the correct manner, can help regulate and balance the body, mind and spirit. In this course, receive a brief theoretical overview of how these acupoints can offer us access to both the physical and emotional aspects of ourselves. We will then learn acupressure techniques for specific points and how to use the power of the mind to facilitate self-love, deep healing and transformation. Acupuncturist, therapist and martial artist William Kaplanidis talks about how you can use acupressure techniques to help address a wide range of symptoms and ailments, including pain, digestive problems, nasal congestion, eye strain, headaches, PMS, anxiety, insomnia, trauma, depression and more. No previous experience is necessary.

Slide Lecture | More than Munchkins: A History of Performing Little People (Zoom)

For centuries, Little People have been a mainstay of popular entertainment. In this illustrated talk, author and performer Trav S.D. traces the historical ups and downs of very short-statured entertainers from medieval times through the era of P.T. Barnum and dime museums, to side shows and circuses, to vaudeville, to movies and television. Along the way, we trace the evolution of the Little Person’s image in popular culture, from one of cruel derision in the age of the court jester…to one of glamour, as personified by sex symbol and Emmy-winning actor Peter Dinklage…to a virtual return to carny days on reality TV.

Talk | Line Death Dance: Book Presentation, Film Launch, and Artist Talk (virtual)

Line Death Dance was originally a performance residency conceived by artist Melanie Maar for ritualizing The Chocolate Factory Theater’s transition from their old building into their new one in Queens. After two live performance phases, the pandemic redirected her to envision and create in other mediums and the project became a newsletter presenting the works of featured artists in light, sound, design, dance, film and visual art. Now in the form of a book (co-edited by Maar and Laura Atwell) with images from the dance, these newsletters will be presented along with a short film (made in the yet un-rennovated space and its surroundings) made as a sequel to the project, and artist talk - all in a celebration of the birthing of these works.
