An exhibition of new photographs by Roe Ethridge.Moving fluidly between the realms of fine art, fashion photography, stock imagery, and social media, Ethridge juxtaposes carefully staged scenes with vignettes from everyday life, pursuing a visual language that is, in his own words, “‘right’ in its wrongness.” Investigating the constant tension between chance occurrence and the photographer’s editorial eye, he produces surreal and theatrical images that reflect the textures of modern society.

Opening Reception | Something Else to It: New Painting

Jasper Johns' famous quote, "Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it," written with the weight of historical European painting still leaning heavily on artists, was a revolutionary approach to artmaking. Seventy some years later, however, Johns' edict is more or less standard practice. The concept of 'painting' no longer feels like a parameter within which one must work, but a tool with myriad options and layers of potential. The seven artists in this show have taken painting itself and done something else to it.

Sunny Jain's album Wild Wild East encompasses myriad facets of Jain's identity both as a first-generation South Asian-American and as a global musician, from his own family's immigration story to his eclectic musical upbringing. In recasting the immigrant -- steeped in the courage to leave a familiar homeland for a new beginning -- as the modern-day cowboy and cowgirl, Jain sources musical inspiration from the scores of Bollywood classics and Spaghetti Westerns, Indian folk traditions, jazz improvisation, and rollicking psychedelic and surf guitar styles. Composer/drummer Sunny Jain is most known for founding the band Red Baraat, a frenzied fusion of bhangra, hip-hop, jazz, rock, and sheer, unbridled energy that NPR has called "the best party band in years."
