Park Walk | (In-Person) Foraging Tour in Central Park: Sweet Berries, Wild Herbs and Vegetables, and More

Central Park, always a great park for foraging, is spectacular in early summer. The fruits alone make the park worth visiting. Two species of mulberries, red and white, and their pink hybrid, drop berries everywhere. You only need to position a drop cloth under a branch and shake, to harvest a year's supply. These berries are perfect in any fruit recipe. They make great jam, and they freeze well too. When the bushes get full sunlight, the juneberries (serviceberries) are also spectacular. With a sweet flavor like blueberries, apples, and almonds, it's a testament to our disregard for nature that no one has ever cultivated this top-notch fruit. Wild herbs and vegetables thrive throughout the park. You'll be looking for poor man's pepper, sheep sorrel, wood sorrel, lamb's-quarters, wild ginger, greenbrier, lady's thumb, purslane, and Asiatic dayflower. Epazote is one of the park's best culinary herbs. A mainstay in Mexican cuisine, it's great in guacamole, salsa, and bean dishes. The tour will last for about 4 hours.

Discussion | Egg Rolls, Egg Creams, and Empanadas Festival: Folk Arts (Zoom)

Learn about Vejigante masks from Puerto Rico and Chinese and Jewish paper cutting! Folk arts are centered around community. Folk groups reflect and communicate their values, ideas, and beliefs across generations. They are a part of lifecycle events, holiday celebrations, religious observances, and everyday life. Folk arts are passed down from parent to child, elder to younger, or master to apprentice. In the process, the arts are often adapted to accommodate changing situations. But their roots in tradition are ever present. Join a tour of Felipe Rangel's home and studio, featuring the brilliant Vejigante Mask of Puerto Rico. Artists Ling Tang and Rachel Asarnow will discuss the similarities and differences between Chinese and Jewish paper cutting and demonstrate the unique art forms and describe their traditions.

Opera | Met Opera: Verdi's La Traviata (virtual, streaming for 23 hours)

La Traviata's sumptuous melodies and timeless depiction of doomed love have made the work a favorite of generations of operagoers. In his approach to this classic drama, director Willy Decker sets the action on a nearly bare stage, focusing the audience's full attention on the three main characters. As Violetta, the ailing courtesan desperate to escape her past, soprano Sonya Yoncheva offers a fearless and sympathetic performance from beginning to end. American tenor Michael Fabiano sings with ardent longing as her devoted lover Alfredo, delivering emotionally wrought phrases and ringing top notes. Thomas Hampson brings a burnished baritone to Germont, Alfredo's protective father whose stern demands spell disaster for the young couple. On the podium, maestro Nicola Luisotti leads an electric performance of Verdi's unforgettable score. From March 11, 2017.

Film | Playing with Sharks (2021): Documentary with The Icon in Underwater Filmmaking (In-Person)

Playing with Sharks A true pioneer in both underwater filmmaking and shark research, Valerie Taylor is a living legend and icon in the underwater world whose life's work has become the basis for much of what we know about sharks today.
