Play | The Niceties: A Play by Manhattan Theatre Club (virtual, streaming for 24 hours)

An ambitious young Black college student and her esteemed white professor meet over Skype to discuss a paper the college junior is writing about the American Revolution. Unfortunately, they find it hard to agree about the facts of the past - or the present. Discussions of grammar and Google turn to race and reputation, and soon they're in dangerous territory neither of them had foreseen - and facing stunning implications that can't be undone. The New York Times hails it as "a bristling, provocative debate play about race and privilege in the United States." Written by Eleanor Burgess and directed by Kimberly Senior. The presentation reunites the original stars Lisa Banes (Broadway: Rumors, High Society, Arcadia, Accent on Youth, Present Laughter) and Jordan Boatman, updated for the virtual stage since its original production in MTC's 2018-2019 Season. The streaming is available until Jun 13th.

Screening | Herbert von Karajan, Mstislav Rostropovich, The Berlin Philharmonic: R. Strauss's Don Quixote, 1975 (virtual)

In this 1975 performance recorded at the Berlin Philharmonie, Herbert von Karajan leads the preeminent Berlin Philharmonic--with the esteemed "Slava" Rostropovich on cello--delivering the rich, sonic palette of Strauss's concert-hall favorite. Generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, Herbert von Karajan was a dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death in 1989. By one estimate, he was the top-selling classical music recording artist of all time, having sold an estimated 200 million records. Mstislav ("Slava") Rostropovich (1927 - 2007) was a Soviet and Russian cellist and conductor. He is considered by many to be the greatest cellist of the 20th century. In addition to his interpretations and technique, he was well known for both inspiring and commissioning new works, which enlarged the cello repertoire more than any cellist before or since. He inspired and premiered over 100 pieces, forming long-standing friendships and artistic partnerships with composers including Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Henri Dutilleux, Witold Lutoslawski, Olivier Messiaen, Luciano Berio, Krzysztof Penderecki, Alfred Schnittke, Norbert Moret, Andreas Makris, Leonard Bernstein, Aram Khachaturian and Benjamin Britten. The streaming will be available until Jun 18th.

Discussion | Talking Climate: Law (virtual)

The word ‘law’ comes from the Old Norse for ‘something laid down or fixed.’ But the law, like the society that authors it in hope of stability, is in fact always in flux. It changes in response to emergent or newly recognized crises and struggles, even as it shapes their course. The two defining and interlinked crises of our time—climate and inequality—have generated countless legal developments. In Talking Climate: Law, an interdisciplinary panel will examine some of the most critical and think together about their meaning for climate justice and progress.
