Performance | Human: Puppetry Musical Inspired by African Diasporic Storytelling Traditions (with ASL & Audio Decription)

A theatrical experience that blends puppetry, music, and movement to explore what it truly means to be human. Now that humans are extinct and the world as we knew it has ended, the Octopus has a decision to make… Will it be willing to give up one of its three hearts in order to create a new, more sensitive human being? Will it be willing to give humanity a second chance? Rooted in African diasporic storytelling traditions and the musical lineages of blues, jazz, and soul, HUMAN explores themes of connection, human rights, ancestral memory, climate, and collective responsibility and asks audiences to question what it really means to be human in a time of deep ethical fracture. This performance is preceded by a free puppet-making workshop at 6 pm, using upcycled materials, culminating in a short, audience-led procession into the theater, where these creations become part of the performance experience. Workshop | Lecture & Medititation Session: Buddhist Transmission across East, Central, & South Asia.

As part of the programming for Tuan Andrew Nguyen's artwork, The Light That Shines Through the Universe, this event features a lecture and guided meditation experience. Through this combination of intellectual and contemplative practice, this event invites audiences to pause, reflect, and consider the artwork's historical and philosophical themes through both thought and experience. Featuring a lecture by Jin Xu, Jane and Leopold Swergold Associate Professor of Chinese Art History at Columbia University, this session situates the Bamiyan Buddha within the broader history of Buddhist transmission across East, Central, and South Asia. The session highlights how trade routes facilitated cultural encounters, religious coexistence, and the circulation of artistic forms. The lecture will be followed by a guided meditation by Jessica Angima, a Kenyan-American artist, organizer, and dharma practitioner in the Western Insight and Theravada traditions. With over ten years of training and mentorship, she leads meditation and contemplative experiences in community green spaces throughout New York City.

Opening Reception | The Tropics, The Moon, and Mars: Immersive Solo Exhibition Exploring a Post-Natural Tropical Environment

The Tropics, The Moon, and Mars is an exhibition of Brooklyn-based Brazilian artist Mari Nagem. In an immersive installation that unites light, sound, sculpture, painting, and digital experiments, Nagem constructs a post-natural tropical environment in which heat reorganizes relationships between bodies, technologies, geological formations, and living systems. The tropics appear as climate, home, and projection: a lived geography shaped by extraction, ecological transformation, and a long history of being imagined from elsewhere. The exhibition originates from a simple yet unsettling proposition: humanity dreams of becoming an interplanetary species while remaining unable to live collaboratively with the terrestrial ecologies it already inhabits. Rather than presenting planetary expansion as technological triumph, Nagem considers how fantasies of the Moon and Mars extend the same logics that have long shaped extractive relationships on Earth. The three locales of the exhibition title become less distinct destinations than overlapping terrains through which to reconsider survival, adaptation, and coexistence.

Performance | Desire Delayed: Realist Play on the Streets of New York

The story unfolds between sirens, city sounds, voices, and the wild figures of New York, causing the spectators' view to wander from character to character - from the couple at the bus stop to the food truck, into the passing car, and to the doormen on the other side of the street. The characters tell little stories of a complicated world, in this short moment of their existence in which we are observing them - sometimes unnoticed, sometimes bizarre, intimate, and funny. While the audience can only see the street, the scenes are defined by the live editing of the sound. Written and directed by Marie Sturminger & Felix Dennhardt.

Performance | Human: Puppetry Musical Inspired by African Diasporic Storytelling Traditions

Written & Directed by Nehprii Amenii.
