Opening Reception | Overexposure: Group Exhibition Exploring Light, Surface, Texture, & Saturation

In this exhibition, each of the six featured artists approaches the concept of exposure through a distinct technical process. Overexposure, a term associated with the world of photography, brings together six artists whose work explores the effects of light, surface, texture and saturation across painting, photography and mixed media. In photographic terms, overexposure occurs when too much light enters the image, dissolving details and transforming perception. In this exhibition, that idea expands into a broad visual and material language. Color becomes heightened, surfaces become tactile, and images shift between clarity and distortion. Artists' practices form a conversation around the image pushed beyond simple representation. Overexposure considers how light can reveal, obscure, intensify, and transform the information we receive. Through radiant color and altered references, this exhibition invites you to fall deep into the sensation of viewing reflective materials and layered surfaces.

Poetry Reading | Poetry Salon: Decolonial & Ecofeminist Poet Cecilia Vicuña (+ Live Music& Poet Interview) (In Person AND Online!)

This World Poetry Salon event encourages attendees to experience words and music from around the globe. Each event features readings by a celebrated poet set to live music by a musician of the same cultural background. This salon will feature a reading by poet Cecilia Vicuña accompanied by musician Ricardo Gallo. A printout will be available for attendees to follow along with Vicuña's poetry during the reading. Following the reading, Vicuña will be interviewed by event host Patricio Ferrari.  Cecilia Vicuña's poetic work in space, performance, and visual arts is considered a decolonizing vision that anticipates ecofeminism. She created the autonomous concept of "Precarious Art" in the mid-1960s in Chile to name what disappears. “Arte Precario” stands as a new independent and non-colonized category for her precarious works composed of structures that disappear in the landscape, which include her quipus (knot in Quechua), envisioned as poems in space. Vicuña has re-invented the ancient Pre-Columbian quipu system of non-writing with knots through ritual acts that weave the urban landscape, rivers and oceans, as well as people, to re-construct a sense of unity and awareness of interconnectivity. These works bridge art and poetry as a way of “hearing an ancient silence waiting to be heard.” Born in Bogotá, Colombia and based in New York, composer Ricardo Gallo has written for acoustic and electro-acoustic formats, for short films, videos, dance, installations, and multimedia stage productions, and has performed and written for improvisatory groups.

Classical Music | Dvorak's American Quartet & More Celebrating "Uniquely American" Music (indoors)

Performers from the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center perform an evening of classical music in honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. A string quartet led by Concertmaster Ruggero Allifranchini, violin, and featuring Laura Frautschi, violin, Shmuel Katz, viola, and Ilya Finkelshteyn, cello, performs Still Singing, the second string quartet from Jazz at Lincoln Center's own Wynton Marsalis. This signature work captures Marsalis's joyful embrace of American music traditions, from jazz to blues, and classical to funk. The quartet also plays Dvorak's String Quartet No. 12 in F major, better known as the American quartet. As an immigrant artist living in New York in 1893, Dvorak famously predicted that a "great and noble school" of uniquely American music would spring from the nation's "negro melodies." In keeping with his prognostication, Dvorak's American quartet evokes the panoply of sounds that enlivened American music at the turn of the 20th century, with notable influence from Black spirituals and other contemporary folk music of the time. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon for all.
