Dance Performance | K-Swing Takes New York

A group of Korean dancers arrives in New York, and they begin dancing freely in the streets, each expressing their unique personality through movement. While enjoying the moment together, one dancer’s look draws playful teasing from the group. As the others go off to explore the city, that dancer follows a captivating tune into a bar, where a heartfelt encounter unfolds. The space soon turns vibrant with joyful line dancing, energetic music, and a surprising clash between performers. The night unfolds in waves—security guards take over the stage with bold moves, followed by dazzling flapper dancers. As the lights dim, mysterious late-night guests emerge for a gripping and intense group performance, filling the stage with suspense and raw energy. Then, the tension fades as cleaners dance in the early light of dawn, bringing brightness and calm. A mambo celebration lifts the mood, eventually giving way to an electrifying Lindy Hop group number. In the finale, all dancers come together to celebrate the vibrant meeting of swing and K-culture.

Opening Reception | André Ethier & Steve Keister: Goblins, Gods, and the Grotesque Sublime

Two solo exhibitions investigate myth, form, and the surreal within new paintings and sculptures: André Ethier's work features impulsively painted goblin figures engaged in absurd motions, such as sweeping at black holes, smoking cigarettes, and fleeing an idyllic past. Created in single sittings, these works channel subconscious forces, which Ethier refers to as "the inevitable collision of the grotesque and the sublime." Steve Keister presents mixed-media sculptures and ceramic wall works inspired by Mesoamerican architecture. Drawing from Pre-Columbian myth, Keister constructs contemporary deities and mystical beings utilizing salvaged materials such as Styrofoam and cardboard, reimagined through processes of casting and collage.

Dancing | Dynamic Brazilian Big Band Brings a Unique, Expressive Sound for Dancing

Gafieira Rio Miami is a dynamic Brazilian big band made up of 11 talented musicians from Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil, and the United States, reflecting South Florida's rich cultural tapestry. Founded by native Brazilian and Latin GRAMMY winner Diogo Brown, Gafieira Rio Miami breathes new life into samba de gafieira partner dancing, a lively tradition that flourished in Brazil during the 1940s and '50s. Originating in Rio de Janeiro, gafieira dance halls were hubs of creativity where waltz, jazz, soul, tango, and samba rhythms merged to create a unique, expressive sound that defied social conventions and invited creative movement. As Brown shows, gafieira embraces a range of genres such as chorinho, pagode, and maxixe. The group's repertoire includes gorgeous arrangements of classics by Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Alcione, Wilson das Neves, Moacir Santos, and many more. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon.

Louis Henry Mitchell—the creative director of character design for Sesame Workshop—holds a conversation about his book Qreative Evolution: How to Question Everything to Find Your Creative Fulfillment with Emmy Award–winning producer, creator, and author Trevor Crafts. When he was six years old, Louis Henry Mitchell first saw Muppet creator Jim Henson and Kermit the Frog on the Ed Sullivan Show, and a spark was lit that would ultimately lead him to his position at Sesame Workshop. His belief that everyone is an artist is the core principle behind Qreative Evolution. Louis shares a completely new way of looking at talent, creativity, and living our fullest potential, and gives readers the tools and support needed before the creative process even begins. Through enchanting stories and wisdom gained over his successful and fulfilling career, Louis demonstrates what we can achieve when we are loyal to our creative calling, and how we continue to evolve as works of art throughout our lifetimes. Louis Henry Mitchell is the creative director of character design at Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street, where he directs and oversees all aspects of character art.  Trevor Crafts is an Emmy Award–winning producer, creator, and author whose passion for bold storytelling, striking visuals, and unforgettable characters have made him a distinctive voice in the entertainment industry. Book Discussion | Author Talks about Her New Book on Art Activism: The War of Art

What do artists' protests reveal about the possibilities for protest in our democracy? Lauren O'Neill-Butler's The War of Art invites us to learn, imagine, and mobilize, which attendees do together at this talk joined by O'Neill-Butler and fellow writers E.C. Feiss and Ciaran Finlayson. Artists in America have long battled against injustices, believing that art can in fact "do more." The War of Art tells this history of artist-led activism and the global political and aesthetic debates of the 1960s to the present. In contrast to the financialized art market and celebrity artists, the book explores the power of collective effort -- from protesting to philanthropy, and from wheat pasting to planting a field of wheat. Lauren O'Neill-Butler charts the post-war development of artists' protest and connects these struggles to a long tradition of feminism and civil rights activism. The book offers portraits of the key individuals and groups of artists who have campaigned for solidarity, housing, LGBTQ+, HIV/AIDS awareness, and against Indigenous injustice and the exclusion of women in the art world. Based upon in-depth oral histories with the key figures in these movements, and illustrated throughout, The War of Art is an essential corrective to the idea that art history excludes politics. Lauren O'Neill-Butler is a New York-based writer and editor. Her books include The War of Art: A History of Artists' Protest in America and Let's Have a Talk: Conversations with Women on Art and Culture. A former cofounder of the nonprofit magazine November and Senior Editor of Artforum, she has written for Aperture, Art Journal, Bookforum, and The New York Times, among many others.

Dancing | Afro-Brazilian Samba Dance Grooves

The Bahia-born and North Carolina-based vocalist and instrumentalist Caique Vidal joins us with his band Batuque for a concert of Afro-Brazilian samba. A community organizer for the Brazilian diaspora, Vidal began his journey on the streets of Salvador da Bahia, known as "the Black Rome of the Americas". Playing with Olodum, the founding family of samba-reggae, Vidal has presented the genre's infectious rhythms and message of empowerment across Brazil, Europe, and the United States. A studied rhythmic and choral arranger, Caique Vidal has shared the stage with musical ambassadors including Susana Baca, Carlinhos Brown, and Gilberto Gil. Concert | Radical Brazilian Pop Band Os Mutantes: Psychedelic, Tropicália, and Protest Music

Though initially only rarely heard outside of Brazil, Os Mutantes is currently acknowledged as among the most dynamic, original, radical, and influential bands of their era. These brash musical experimentalists engaged distortion, feedback, sampling techniques and a prescient selection of studio tricks to create a lighthearted, playful, yet still extreme Brazilian pop. An integral part of the psychedelic, Tropicália and protest movements, Os Mutantes combined unbridled guitars, traditional rhythms, an optimistic vision of the future, and an advanced melodic sensibility. Now, nearly 60 years removed from their founding, Os Mutantes’s approach to sonic collage and a wry tendency toward cultural irony ushered in a near-universal modern music aesthetic.  There are two ways to access this event: 1. Concert | Celebration of Afro-Brazilian Choro Music

Meet up with the New York-based Brazilian choro and samba ensemble Regional Samauma for a celebration of the sounds of Brazil through the potent group music-making gathering known as a Roda de Choro! Choro references a rich repertoire that dates back nearly two centuries and represents the fusion of Afro-Brazilian traditions with classical sonorities and dance forms from European culture. Initially developed in the post-slavery Rio de Janeiro in the late 1800s, choro remains a fundamental driving force for the contemporary expression of Brazilian culture. For this event, Regional Samauma presents a two-part Roda de Choro, beginning with a historical journey across 150 years of choro styles, incorporating maxixe, Brazilian polka and tango, samba, lundu, and baiao. In the second part, they invite the audience to participate in a semi-improvisational performance. Bring your own instrument and join in the fun with a few choro tunes! 5:00-6:00 pm: Presentation of choro music by Regional Samauma 6:00-6:30 pm: Participatory Roda de Choro Seating is first-come first-served. Written by Will Power Directed by Carl Cofield In the event of rain, the start of the performance may be delayed; however, the performance will begin as soon as it is possible to do so.
