Dancing | Learn To Mambo with Live Music

In this social dance night, Sekou McMiller will teach how to mambo, along with the sounds of live musicians igniting the dance floor. From 1945 to 1966, The Palladium Ballroom was the home for the mambo, a social, partner dance. The Palladium is also recognized as the first integrated dance space in Midtown, and it was known to the clubgoers as a place of family, a place of love, and a place of dance. Dance artist and historian Sekou McMiller spent time in a residency at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division at the Library for the Performing Arts, working with, speaking to, and dancing with elders from the mambo community that spent their youth at the Palladium. Their stories and the dance moves they shared with McMiller were filmed and are now part of the Division’s archive. The spirit of mambo lives on through their legacy—one which everyone can still enjoy!  There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon.

Concert | Music in the Park: Eclectic Artists with Giant Talents

Jazz royalty and disco pioneer, Asha Puthli returns to the stage after a 19 year hiatus. Known for her award-winning vocals on Ornette Coleman’s “Science Fiction” album, the music pioneer has released twelve albums, was a favorite at Studio 54 and placed by Andy Warhol in his time capsule. Her cult classic “Space Talk” was a mainstay at the Paradise Garage and The Loft, sampled by A-list hip-hop artists and launched into space!  For years Cymande was a flame that burned quick but bright; the group, which drew its membership from several Caribbean nations, mixed funk, soul, reggae, rock, calypso, and jazz with African rhythms into a sound they dubbed “nyah-rock.” After releasing three albums between 1971-1974, they disappeared until reforming to tour in the 2010s. They’ll be performing their classics and their brand-new 2025 album Renascence. Zacchae’us Paul is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer with a fresh and irreverent take on Black music and the African diaspora, stretching and bending jazz around Atlanta hip-hop, gospel sounds and philosophies, and the Caribbean rhythms he picked up studying in Puerto Rico. Spinning tunes between sets is DJ K.Tea, an NYC-based DJ from St. Louis and Chicago who crafts sonic journeys that inspire freedom, dance, and discovery within house music.  Doors open at 5:00 pm.

Musical | Deaf Broadway Presents Waitress with ASL

Following their productions of RENT and Once on This Island, Deaf Broadway brings a live staging of the Broadway smash-hit Waitress by Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson—offering a more equitable shared evening for hearing and Deaf audiences alike, showcasing a full Deaf Broadway cast performing the music through ASL with direction by Sandra Mae Frank. In just five short years, Deaf Broadway has become synonymous with authentically Deaf musical theater. The organization was founded during the 2020 pandemic in response to artistic director Garrett Zuercher's experience with the state of Deaf access to performances of lyrically complex musicals, which too often water down the nuance of the original work’s language and intentions. Taking up the gauntlet, he and his team began producing American Sign Language interfaces of popular musicals. Eventually, the company began staging the prerecorded audio performance of the musical, presented live by a trained Deaf cast acting their individual parts in ASL.  There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon.
