Discussion | visible: The Inside Story

A discussion of the collaboration between Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Nora Chipaumire. visible is a performance work that explores epic journeys, myths, dreams, and memories of both the known world and an imagined future in an unknown land. Nora Chipaumire and Jawole Zollar conceive of a landscape that unlocks the personal narratives of those who leave their homelands—by choice or not—in search of the “warmth of other suns” (Richard Wright). Performed by men and women of all ages from around the world, the work draws directly on the personal experiences of the cast, as well as influential moments in history and poetry, in order to explore how the world we live in projects ideas of dominance and submission, shadows and light, sentient beings who are visible and ancestral forces that we feel but cannot see. What new ideas of art, visible dares ask, emerge when we confront the difference of “the other”? What kinds of work are we capable of if we have nothing to lose and nothing to prove? visible premieres October 12–15, at Harlem Stage.

Concert | An Afternoon of Gospel

The Mount Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church Choir will be joined by The First Corinthian Baptist Church Choir and a screening of Rejoice and Shout, which tells the history of African-American gospel music. Born out of a fusion of the plantation work songs and Christian hymns, gospel music has been a source of inspiration since the first recordings of the Dinwiddie Colored Quartet in 1902. With archival materials from the Golden Gate Quartet to Mahalia Jackson and Rev. James A. Cleveland, Rejoice and Shout furthers the dialogue of how the gospel genre rectifies its "roots" with technological advances and an increasing secular influence.

Her apprehension by the police sets off tension between Spike and his brother-in-law, as a race war broods inside the Terrordome. 90 min. Also showing: Meokgo and the Stick Fighter (2006, 19 min.) directed by Teboho Malatshi. - A haunting tale spiced with magical realism, Meokogo & the Stick Fighter is the story of Kgotso, a recluse stickfighter who lives a solitary life high up in the MalutiMountains of Lesotho.
