Workshop | Citizen Cartography Workshop: Build a Virtual Atlas of New York

Help build the geospatial library of the future. This workshop (which takes place the three times a month) will get you oriented with the a set of tools the Library has developed that enables librarians and the general public to add valuable geographic context to old maps. The workshop will focus on the core activity of the website: georectification, or "warping" maps. This means overlaying digital images of historic maps onto a contemporary digital map (similar to Google Maps), transforming them into tiles of a virtual atlas. 15 participants max. There are literally thousands of maps to process — far too big a job for the Library to do on its own. So they're enlisting you, the Citizen Cartographer corps, to help lay the foundations of a powerful new research tool that will benefit scholars, educators and history enthusiasts around New York and the world.

Jazz | Master Class: Jimmy Heath, famous saxophonist

The saxophonist and composer speaks about his autobiography, I Walked with Giants. Jimmy Heath has long been recognized as a brilliant instrumentalist and a magnificent composer and arranger. He has performed with nearly all the jazz greats of the last 50 years, from Howard McGhee, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis to Wynton Marsalis. One of Heath’s earliest big bands (1947-1948) in Philadelphia included John Coltrane, Benny Golson, Specs Wright, Cal Massey, Johnny Coles, Ray Bryant, and Nelson Boyd. Charlie Parker and Max Roach sat in on one occasion. Heath’s enduring dedication to jazz as well as his musicianship prompted the following tributes: “All I can say is, if you know Jimmy Heath, you know Bop.” — Dizzy Gillespie “Trane was always high on Jimmy’s playing and so was I. Plus, he was a very hip dude to be with, funny and clean and very intelligent. Jimmy is one of the thoroughbreds.” — Miles Davis “My pick from the world’s talent would be Diz as leader, John Lewis or Hank Jones on piano, Ray Brown bass, Milt Jackson vibes, Jimmy Heath tenor, and Sonny Stitt alto.” — Kenny Clarke “I had met Jimmy Heath, who - besides being a wonderful saxophonist - understood a lot about musical construction. I joined his group in Philadelphia in 1948. We were very much alike in our feeling, phrasing and a whole lot of other ways. Our musical appetites were the same. We used to practice together, and he would write out some of the things we were interested in. We would take things from records and digest them. In this way, we learned about the techniques being used by writers and arrangers.” — John Coltrane, Downbeat, 1960

Book Signing | Goldie Hawn, Academy Award-winning star, signs copies of her book 10 Mindful Minutes with Goldie Hawn

Across the country, the revolutionary MindUP program, which was developed under the auspices of the Hawn Foundation, established by Goldie Hawn, is teaching children vital social and emotional skills. By understanding how their brains work, children discover where their emotions come from and become more self-aware. They learn to appreciate the sensory aspects of their lives and to value the positive effects of mindfulness, compassion, and kindness. This, in turn, empowers them to manage and reduce their own stress-and helps them be happy. Those who have seen the remarkable effects of this program have been eager to learn how to implement it in their own homes and use its practices for themselves, too. Now, for the first time, its secrets are being shared with all parents and children in 10 Mindful Minutes.

With Joe Palca, a science correspondent for NPR, and Flora Lichtman, the multimedia editor for Science Friday. What is the recipe for annoyance? For starters, it should be temporary, unpleasant, and unpredictable, like a boring meeting or mosquito bites. Lecture | “How we, too, are still pious”: Nietzsche’s Influence on 20th Century Philosophy of Science

Amidst widespread agreement that Nietzsche did not contribute anything to the philosophy of science except an anti-positivist stance, it is surprising to see that prominent representatives of the Vienna Circle like Schlick, Frank, Carnap and Neurath had a generally positive attitude towards Nietzsche. German scholar Helmut Heit will investigate the reception of Nietzsche during this founding period of modern philosophy of science, and show, how the main reason for this positive view of Nietzsche was based on the thinker’s critique of an underlying metaphysical religious foundation of the modern scientific enterprise. Helmut Heit received his PhD in 2003 at the Leibniz Universität Hannover for a book on early Greek philosophy. After visiting fellowships at the University of Melbourne and the University of California at San Diego, he worked on Paul Feyerabend’s philosophy of nature at the Humboldt-University of Berlin. Since 2007 he pursues a research project on Nietzsche’s philosophy of science at the Institut für Philosophie, Technische Universität Berlin.
