Symposium | Moving Sounds Festival

10:30 AM -12:20 PM | Improvisation in music Participants: George Lewis, Thomas Schäfer (Darmstadt Institute), Eva Reiter, Martin Kaltenbrunner, Andreas Stadler (ACF), Helge Hinteregger (mica, moderator),/br> Improvisation in music. This is a phrase which is often used but rarely helps shed light on the wide range of various "schools" and modes of improvisation around the world. Can you recognize if it comes from Europe, US, Japan or from a single country? What is the historical difference between improvisation and improvisation as practiced by the new generation? Difference in jazz, new music and experimental music? What is the effect of new technology? Explore the world of improvisation yesterday, today and in the future. Let's talk about it. 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM | Composers of Moving Sounds 2011 Participants: David Fulmer, Eva Reiter, George Lewis, Jiří Kadeřábek, Andreas Stadler (moderator),/br> The new millennium has seen the return of the composer-performer. This trend, absent amongst many of the composers in the 20th-century, is largely the result of contemporary composers' direct connection with the phenomena of SOUND, and sound production. The composers in question are virtuoso performers of the viola da gamba, the contrabass recorder, the violin, the trombone, and of the voice. Come discuss music making and composition with these four unique artists.

Screening | Experimental Film: Philip Solomon's American Falls (2010)

Solomon says of his film: "American Falls is a single-channel triptych adaptation of a 55-minute, six-channel, 5.1-surround installation commissioned by the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. It was inspired by a trip that I took to the capital at the invitation of the Corcoran in 1999, where I first encountered Frederick Church's great painting Niagara; took note of a multichannel video installation being projected onto the walls of the Corcoran rotunda; and went on walking tours of various monuments to the "fallen" throughout the DC area. The architecture of the rotunda in the vicinity of Niagara invited me to muse on creating an all-enveloping, manmade "falls", re-imagined as a WPA/Diego Rivera cine-mural, where the mediated images of the American Dream that I had been absorbing since childhood would flow together into the river with the roaring turbulence of America's failures to sustain the myths and ideals so deeply embedded in the received iconography." - Philip Solomon 55 min.
