Workshop | Citizen Cartography Workshop: Build a Virtual Atlas of New York

Help build the geospatial library of the future. This workshop (which takes place the three times a month) will get you oriented with the a set of tools the Library has developed that enables librarians and the general public to add valuable geographic context to old maps. The workshop will focus on the core activity of the website: georectification, or "warping" maps. This means overlaying digital images of historic maps onto a contemporary digital map (similar to Google Maps), transforming them into tiles of a virtual atlas. 15 participants max. There are literally thousands of maps to process — far too big a job for the Library to do on its own. So they're enlisting you, the Citizen Cartographer corps, to help lay the foundations of a powerful new research tool that will benefit scholars, educators and history enthusiasts around New York and the world.

Opening Reception | Photography: Choi Byungkwan's Bamboo

Korean photographer Choi Byungkwan's exhibition contains mystical black and white images that convey a sense of the nobility and high spiritual values Asian cultures have assigned to this distinctive plant. His photographs, which were taken in the dense shade of a bamboo forest, reveal flashes of light filtering into the black backdrop of the grove. In this deep darkness, light appears and disappears and the photographer transforms it into tones of grey and black like the ink of a brush stroke, exploring shades and multiple nuances of minimal colors.

Theater | Classic Greek Drama: Sophocles' Oedipus Rex

The Greeks, like us, knew that Oedipus was going to gouge his eyes out, even before the play began. And yet they still came out in droves. Come see what all the fuss was about as The Faux-Real Theatre Company brings their Dionysian depiction of Oedipus, featuring an all-male cast of twelve utilizing the performance techniques of the ancient Greeks including: brightly colored wigs, fantastical costumes, and masks that act as megaphones. By incorporating the colorful aesthetic of these ancient performances and utilizing a broad physical style of acting powered by live music, songs and dancing, this work looks beyond the “fate versus free will” interpretations of this classic, to explore the alluring underbelly of this primal text. Their heightened approach reveals what is terrifying and vital in this most tragic of tragedies, enhancing the story's power to roil our subconscious and to awaken the heroes within.
