Lecture | Revolutionary Agonistes: Latin American Revolutions 200 Years Later

Jeremy Adelman, Walter Samuel Carpenter III Professor of Spanish Civilization and Culture and director of the Council for International Teaching and Research, Princeton University, will be delivering a lecture entitled “Revolutionary Agonistes: Latin American Revolutions 200 Years Later.” He is the author or editor of eight books, most recently Sovereignty and Revolution in the Iberian Atlantic (2006) and Worlds Together, Worlds Apart: A History of Humankind from Origins to the Present (2010). He has just completed a biography of the great 20th-century social scientist Albert O. Hirschman. For 200 years, Latin Americans have wrestled with the meaning of their secession from the Spanish and Portuguese empires. They have treated their revolutions both as heroic triumphs and tragic defeats. What's been consistent is the obsession with these upheavals as the formative moments for Latin American nations. Professor Adelman suggests an alternative hypothesis, that the process of uncoupling these societies from old empires gave birth to modern representative politics, that within that invented practice, Latin Americans struggled to give shape to political communities, and that the “nation” was only one among possible outcomes. It was the proliferation of possibilities that gave these revolutions their durable effects.

Performance | One-Woman Show: Dorothy Leeds' Good Lessons from Bad Women

As Good Lessons from Bad Women begins, it reveals the many sides of Dorothy: stuck between Eleanor Roosevelt as the embodiment of virtue, and the delicious controversies in the lives of five other women: Mae West, Anne Bonney, Eve, Emperor Wu Chau, Elizabeth Freeman, and Mrs. "Machine Gun" Kelly, who became famous (or infamous) for coloring outside the lines. They are unique and often comic portraits of real women that eventually become facets of one woman’s wish to live a spirited life. Dorothy Leeds is a member of the Actors’ Equity Association, AFTRA, and the Dramatists Guild whose credits include the first national tour of Stop the World I Want to Get Off. Leeds has performed and presented at various venues from The Smoot Theatre, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Levy Performing Arts Center, and at many Nassau County Libraries.

Author Reading | Authors Paul D. Miller and Donovan Hohn in Conversation

Miller (a.k.a. DJ Spooky), author of The Book of Ice, and Hohn, author of Moby-Duck in a conversation about the natural world and the environment. Antarctica, the only uninhabited continent, belongs to no single country and has no government. While certain countries lay claim to portions of the landmass, it is the only solid land on the planet with no unified national affiliation. Drawing on the continent's rich history of inspiring exploration and artistic endeavors, Paul D. Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky has put together his own multimedia, multidisciplinary study of Antactica. The Book of Ice is one aspect of this ongoing project. When the writer Donovan Hohn heard of the mysterious loss of thousands of bath toys at sea, he figured he would interview a few oceanographers, talk to a few beachcombers, and read up on Arctic science and geography. But questions can be like ocean currents: wade in too far, and they carry you away. Hohn's accidental odyssey pulls him into the secretive world of shipping conglomerates, the daring work of Arctic researchers, the lunatic risks of maverick sailors, and the shadowy world of Chinese toy factories.
