Conference | The Bottom Line on Climate Change

Fukushima has heated up the debate on the transition to renewable energy. Is green energy the answer to global warming, energy independence, and the prevention of Fukushima-like disasters? If so, will the switch kill jobs and raise taxes? Or will renewable energy create a green recovery? What is the bottom line? Leading U.S. & E.U. government officials, geoscientists, policy analysts, politicians, business leaders and academics will join in New York to discuss how transitioning to renewable energy will affect the fragile U.S. and global economies. Panels will focus on the future of nuclear power, the reality behind green jobs, the practicality of new technologies, and the tensions between developed and developing countries. Participants include Ottmar Edenhofer of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, James Hansen from the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Peter Schlosser from the Earth Institute at Columbia, Dr. Runge-Metzger from the EU Commission, and a member of the German parliament.

Conference | Activism and the Academy: Celebrating 40 Years of Feminist Scholarship and Action

A conference in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Barnard Center for Research on Women, which began its mission of using research and knowledge to advance feminist scholarship and long-term partnerships with activist groups. Inspired by the new women’s movement, BCRW became part of an historic moment that witnessed the proliferation of feminist activism, the establishment of women’s studies programs and women’s centers, and the founding of women’s bookstores and other cultural projects. This fall brings together past, present and future collaborators as well as kindred institutions, scholars and activists engaged in social justice feminism to consider what kinds of collaborative projects are possible when scholarship and activism are joined.

Opening Reception | Group Exhibition: Walking Forward–Running Past

In his 1971 video, "Walking Forward–Running Past," John Baldessari utilizes sequence, repetition, and montage to deconstruct the notion of cinematic chronology. Exploring the visceral and tactile relationship between the image, imaged, and viewer, Baldessari uses the intersection of photography and video to disrupt and call attention to the notion of temporal awareness. Taking this work as its center, Walking Forward–Running Past presents a constellation of works that investigate our complicated and intricate relationship to chronology. The exhibition aims to capture the immediate past and the immediate future at the point where they collide, using its own framework as a way to reevaluate ideas of time and transformation. Walking Forward–Running Past embraces synchronicity, connection and serendipity, presenting a group of works that explore time's malleable form, and questioning the linear narrative conventionally measured as past, present, and future. Artists include John Baldessari, Paul Chan, Zoe Crosher, Catherine Czacki, Andrea Geyer, Tim Lee, Alison O'Daniel, robbinschilds, Will Rogan, and Kimberlee Venable.
