Screening | United States of Palestine-Israel: Here and Elsewhere

With a title lifted from Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Miéville's film Here and Elsewhere, this day of screenings presents contemporary and historical, documentary and fictional films to suggest correspondences in the contested land of Palestine/Israel. Curated by Joshua Simon, the program proposes to view the conflict through the prism of "affinities" rather than "belonging" and "addition" rather than "opposition," and does so in a mixed program of film screenings and conversations. It is presented as one of two programs to accompany the publication of United States of Palestine-Israel, a book of speculative scenarios for the region, edited by Simon.

Theater | Street Theater Company's Bamboozled, or The Real Reality Show

A rip-roaring musical which will tour City streets, parks and playgrounds. The production, free to all New Yorkers, will have book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field and musical score composed by Joseph Vernon Banks. A lowly postman is overwhelmed by the tsunami of unhappiness he is carrying: pink slips, layoffs, businesses closings, Medicare terminations, hospital closings, teacher terminations and condolences sent to the Japanese. The past wars of this planet haunt him and the present wars torment him further. Merlin the Magician appears out of a Christmas card to enlighten him about the Faustian contract we have made with Nuclear Energy. The hero is redeemed by the vision of a cleaner, more harmonious planet lying in the alternative power of the Sun, the Wind and the unfailing power of the people.

Festival | Sun to Stars: South Asian Cultural Festival

An all-day outdoor festival celebrating South Asian culture and sustainability. Inspired by the traditional all-night concerts along India’s Ganges River, SUN TO STARS evokes the traditional durbar and bethak-style concerts where performers and audiences interact in an informal setting to create an intimate artistic experience. The festival will be curated by choreographer Parul Shah and dancer/author Reena Shah, and will include an expanded selection of kids activities: including storytelling; learning hand gestures from Indian classical dance; learning how to wrap a sari; making and flying traditional patang kites; decorating clay pots, as is done for Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and much more! There will also be young student dancers performing alongside their teachers. Children’s activities will be held in the early part of the Festival, between 2pm and 4pm. As the day progresses into the evening, performers will include the Parul Shah Dance Company and sitarists Neel Murgai and Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury.

Staged Reading | Play Reading: Penthesilea by Heinrich von Kleist

Heinrich von Kleist’s great drama about the mythological queen of the Amazonians, Penthesilea, and her passion for her arch-enemy Achilles still features some of German literatures most acute renderings of love and violence. Project creActor, a group of especially gifted young German actors from Munich, presents a staged reading of Kleist’s masterpiece, questioning especially how pathos can be transmitted today in an authentic tonality. Renowned scholar and theater critic Bernd Sucher will give an introduction to the play. The event is bilingual and suitable for non-German speakers.

Dance Performance | 9/11 Commemoration with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Paul Taylor Dance Company and Limon Dance Company

To commemorate the 10th Anniversary of September 11, 2001, this special presentation will feature performances by OSL with Paul Taylor Dance Company; the Limón Dance Company with Voices of Ascension; and additional artists to be announced. The program also will include a new work created by Jessica Lang. Limón Dance Company and Voices of Ascension will perform José Limón’s 1958 Missa Brevis, which features music by Zoltán Kodály composed at the end of World War II during the siege of Budapest. Limón's stirring choreography depicts an indomitable humanity rising up after near destruction. The work, a memento to cities destroyed during World War II and to those unconquerable qualities that permit hope to survive, perfectly reflects the spirit of this commemorative event. OSL and The Paul Taylor Dance Company will present Brandenburgs, Paul Taylor’s 1988 uplifting masterwork set to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 3 and 6. The work displays Taylor’s special affinity for the music of Bach—also seen in such works as Esplanade, Musical Offering and Promethean Fire.

Opening Reception | Filmmaking: Keren Cytter's Video Art Manual

An exhibition of films and works on paper by the Israeli artist. In her films, Cytter explores stories of love, violence, sex, jealousy, betrayal and murder told in non-linear narrative in which time overlaps and characters mutate. The actors repeat lines, switch roles and recite directions aloud, creating a shared lexicon through repetition and rhyme. Cytter's fractured stories, suggestive of dream and memory, are often inspired by direct experience and observation but are filled with literary references, cinematic quotes and clichés drawn from popular culture that result in works that are existential dramas composed from seemingly incompatible genres. Keren Cytter was born in Tel Aviv in 1977. She studied at The Avni Institute in Tel Aviv and received her degree from de Ateliers in Amsterdam. Cytter's work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Moderna Museet, Stockholm;Tate Modern, London; Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam; Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin and Kunsthalle Zürich. Cytter currently lives and works in Berlin.

Theater | More or Less I Am, a Musical Adaptation of Walt Whitman's “Song of Myself”

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11th, Walt Whitman’s America will be brought to life throughout his beloved New York in a stirring music-theater adaptation of “Song of Myself,” the poet’s eloquent tribute to a nation’s ideals on the brink of civil war. Compagnia de’ Colombari's traveling production will offer New Yorkers a timely reminder of America’s diversity, interdependence, and optimism as they reflect on the events of ten years ago and the ways in which it both unified and polarized the country. The production was hailed as a “joyous jamboree” by The New Yorker when it was first presented in spring 2010. The audience is invited to join the cast and crew afterward for a celebratory reception, with food and drink for all to share.
