Screening | 2 Short Films: Metropolis. Report from China / ¡Ni un paso astrás! Not one step back!

Marty Kirchner's ¡Ni un paso astrás! Not one step back! (2011, 15 min.) In English. -- In 2006, Latino and Asian immigrant workers at E-Z Supply, a restaurant supplies warehouse, elected International Workers of the World (IWW) to be their collective bargaining representative in a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) certified union election. Following the election, E-Z Supply failed to engage in meaningful negotiations with the workers and fired thirteen drivers, forklift operators, and warehouse helpers in retaliation for union activity. But the workers remained committed to the struggle and won a major settlement with the company in 2011, including $470,000 illegally withheld minimum wage and overtime pay, and the recognition of IWW as the union representing E-Z supply workers. ¡Ni un paso astrás! Not one step back! is a video about these workers’ struggle by New York based artist Marty Kirchner. Maya Schweizer & Clemens von Wedemeyer's Metropolis. Report from China (2004, 42 min.) In German and French with English subtitles. -- In 2004, artists Maya Schweizer and Clemens von Wedemeyer traveled through Shanghai and Beijing to develop a remake of Metropolis, Fritz Lang’s film classic from the 1920s. The resulting work offers an insight into the exploding growth of these Chinese megacities and questions their current unrestrained drive for progress and modernization. Metropolis. Report from China assembles documentary, fictional and experimental elements. Interviews with architects and workers on the high-rise construction sites are played over the footage: a permanent flow of images accompanies the voices of the interviewees and juxtaposes the social reality behind contemporary Chinese cityscapes with Lang’s early urban utopia.
