Regarded as one of the most popular of all symphonies, Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World," received its world premiere at Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893. During the performance, the end of every movement was met with thunderous clapping and the composer felt obliged to stand up and bow. This was one of the greatest public triumphs of Dvorak's career. Enjoy this 2013 performance by the Czech Philharmonic, the foremost interpreter of works by native son Dvorak. Conducted by Jiri Belohlavek.

Opening Reception | Climate Provocations - RE:DO: Ongoing Island Development

This showcases an array of research projects examining the ongoing development of Governors Island and its pedagogical potential. New York Harbor is indicative of the fragility of cities and human habitat in the era of rapid climate change. A combination of awareness and action is required to address, rethink and reorient our philosophical and intellectual frameworks toward the future. Governors Island, located squarely within the harbor, rests in an intersectional zone between dense urbanity and the exurban, between reclamation and rising tides—fostering aquacultural, agricultural and recreational livelihoods which (combined) signal the types of complex problems the built environment must inevitably face and within which humans must inevitably cohabitate in the 21st century.

Film | We Wanted More (2019): Fighting to Play Soccer

In 1981, Taiwan hosted the second Women’s World Invitation Tournament, the Chunghua Cup. At the time the German Football Association tolerated rather than promoted women’s soccer, which had been banned in the country until 1970. Eleven years later, establishing a women’s national team was still of little interest to the powerful men of German soccer. That’s how the invitation to Taipei ended up with the national champions of SSG 09 Bergisch Gladbach. In this enthralling documentary the former players talk about the now absurd conditions under which they fought for their dream of playing soccer. Historical footage documents the match of their lives and the local soccer fields they started on as well as the cringeworthy men’s world they helped dismantle. Director: John David Seidler Stars: Anne Trabant-Haarbach, Hannelore Geilen, Brigitte Klinz In German with English subtitles

Play | The Two Noble Kinsmen: Shakespeare in a Parking Lot

The Two Noble Kinsmen is a play by John Fletcher and William Shakespeare that was reprinted in a second folio edition of Beaumont and Fletcher's plays in 1679. Its story is taken from "The Knight's Tale" by Chaucer. It is generally accepted to be The Bard's final play before he retired to Stratford-Upon-Avon and died three years later--a collaboration of an older playwright with one whose career had only begun. The play is a tragicomedy in the manner of Fletcher. Presented by the Drilling Company. Chairs are provided on a first come, first served basis and audience members are welcome to bring their own.
