Bob Clyatt updates longstanding sculptural forms to explore contemporary questions. His current projects include CoPortraits: collaborative sculpted portraits made with another artist from a different culture and history, Shared Spaces: engaging diverse communities around the US in creating a sculptural collage of the American flag with their chosen objects, and Conversations: pairing two or more bust sculptures in ways that probe what they might be discussing together if they could. Kate Fauvell - "As a native New Yorker, I'm accustomed to change. Over the course of my lifetime, its residents have transformed the city more times than I can count. That experience informs my art. I believe all things change and make art that alludes to this process."

Talk | Re-Framing Black Music (virtual)

Justin Patch, Assistant Professor of Music at Vassar College, discusses how we might listen to and think about contemporary African American music from the standpoint of subjective listening and emotional need. Rather than searching for transcendent aesthetics, grand theories about “good” music, or deciding which music belongs in the canon, we should consider the lived experience of communities of color and how music meets their varied needs. Songs like Ruth Brown’s “Lucky Lips”, Run DMC’s “My Adidas” or Slave’s “Slide” are often written off as disposable culture, but this discussion argues that what they represented to listeners was inspirational and meaningful.

The Two Noble Kinsmen is a play by John Fletcher and William Shakespeare that was reprinted in a second folio edition of Beaumont and Fletcher's plays in 1679. Its story is taken from "The Knight's Tale" by Chaucer. It is generally accepted to be The Bard's final play before he retired to Stratford-Upon-Avon and died three years later--a collaboration of an older playwright with one whose career had only begun. The play is a tragicomedy in the manner of Fletcher. Presented by the Drilling Company.

Opera | Met Opera: Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (virtual, streaming for 23 hours)

One of the most frequently performed operas in the world, The Marriage of Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro) was composed in 1786 by Mozart, with an Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It tells how the servants Figaro and Susanna succeed in getting married, foiling the efforts of their philandering employer, Count Almaviva, to seduce Susanna and teaching him a lesson in fidelity. In this 1998 performance, the Met assembled a vocal dream team for Jonathan Miller's stylish production of the eternal Mozart masterpiece: Renee Fleming as the Countess, Cecilia Bartoli as Susanna, and Bryn Terfel as Figaro. With James Levine--one of the world's great conductors of Mozart--in the pit, Bartoli interpolating two rarely heard alternate arias, and Dwayne Croft as the Count and Susanne Mentzer as Cherubino.
