Performance | Infested: Performance Art (virtual)

John Pizza presents a little post-quarantine poem about self-courage and the insects inside our guts that wiggle in protest. John Pizza is a performer, builder, and drawer. He uses trash and thrift-store detritus scrounged in his Brooklyn neighborhood to tell stories and make his shows. He loves the macabre and the mushy sweet. His sculptures are performative, and his performances involve sculptures—an object theatre of weird surprises.

Museums | Jewish History: Centuries of Art

One of the largest collections of art and Jewish culture in the world, it focuses both on artifacts of Jewish history and on modern and contemporary art. Works in the collection are presented as distinctive creative expressions and as bearers of the stories of those who made, owned, used, preserved, and sometimes transformed them. Festival | The 10th Annual New York City Poetry Festival

Celebrate 10 years of uniting New York City's vast and diverse poetry community. Every year on the last weekend in July, the New York City Poetry Festival unites the vast and diverse New York City poetry community on the idyllic summer paradise of Governors Island. The festival invites poetry organizations and collectives of all shapes and sizes to bring their unique formats, aesthetics, and personalities to the festival grounds, which are ringed with a collection of beautiful Victorian houses and tucked beneath the wide, green canopies of dozens of century old trees. Fostering an approachable, engaging, diverse, progressive, lively, and culturally prominent literary community lies at the core of the festival's mission. Poets bring to light issues of vital importance; they create avenues of intellect, introspection, political awareness, and artistic communication for anyone to enjoy. The purpose of the New York City Poetry Festival is to liberate New York's poets and their work from the dark corners of bars, bookstores, and universities and to bring together as many poets as possible, in the bright light of day, to meet, read, teach, learn, listen, perform, and collaborate in the festival's very own poetry village. The 10th Annual New York City Poetry Festival will feature more poets than ever before, including our headliners: Terrance Hayes, Deborah Landau, Ariana Reines, and more! We are now accepting sponsor, vendor, art installation, and volunteer applications.

Park Walk | Foraging Tour: Wineberries, Kentucky Coffee Trees, and More

Because this park includes so many varied habitats, it's loaded with shoots and greens in the summer, and many of these renewable resources are edible and medicinal. You'll find spicy hedge mustar, poor man's pepper greens, celery-, parsley-, and carrot-flavored goutweed, violet leaves and flowers. You'll encounter Kentucky coffee trees, with seeds you can use to make the world's best caffeine-free coffee substitute, as well as for seasoning hot chocolate, chocolate pudding, and chocolate truffles.  The wineberry: this invasive Asian species of raspberry, which grows in thickets, is way better than any store-bought raspberry. Further on, you'll see poison ivy and by the end of the tour, everyone will be able to recognize it instantly. You'll also find jewelweed, which prevents poison ivy rash if applied after contact, and also cures mosquito bites and insect stings. The tour will last for about 4 hours.

Opening Reception | Carrying the Thick Present: Artists from Syracuse University

During the last year, the participating artists in this exhibition, from Syracuse University’s MFA program, have experienced lockdown and the adoption of social and physical distancing. They experienced isolation, loss and grief, just like the rest of us. These works emerged out of such conditions, out of the uncertainty of precarious thick presents. Artists had to reconsider their practice and to rethink their (and our) ways of being with others. Under such circumstances, they have found in art-making a way to cultivate their conditions for ongoingness, for healing and for staying alive. Participating artists: Matthew John Apol, Joshua David Baker, Katlyn Brumfield, Allison DeBritz, Jiayu Kang, Gregory G. Mizak, Linda Moses, Brett Morgan, Aanchal Raisahib, Ayesha Rumi, Ryan Somelofske, Catherine Spencer, Kristina Starowitz, Maya Stern, Britton Matthew Thorp, Katherine Virag, Faezeh Tabatabaeimanesh, Shane Zhang II

City Walk | Battery Park City Tour: The Business Core

The second of the Skyscraper Museum's three thematic walking tours of Battery Park City covers the middle zone of the commercial core with its 1980s skyscrapers of the original World Financial Center (now Brookfield Place) by architect Cesar Pelli, as well as the expansive North Cove Marina and its public realm. This walk investigates how the planning concept of public-private partnership was both the principle and economic engine of the Battery Park City project. It will consider how the office and retail precinct connects to lower Manhattan and the World Trade Center and how the goal of opening the waterfront to public access and recreation was realized over three decades. Tour duration is around 60 minutes.
