Performance | We Wear the Masc: Art Song, Verse, Poetry

Brian McQueen's performance piece that explores the intersectionality of being black, femme and queer in the 21st century through the mediums of art song, verse, poetry. The piece explores masculinity as a plurality not solely performed in manner. Brian McQueen’s bass-baritone juxtaposed with their femme identity and performance beckons a broadening of the conversation surrounding black effeminacy; most specifically as a male-bodied person. McQueen reassigns classic poetic text of songs from standard recital repertoire to comment on gender identity, the serviceability of gender, gender performance, race, as well as creating space & visibility as an act of human being with non-binary identification as lens.

Book Club | Stephanie Powell Watts' No One is Coming to Save Us

JJ Ferguson has returned home to Pinewood, North Carolina, to build his dream house -- a huge mansion overlooking the town -- and to pursue his high school sweetheart, Ava. But as he reenters his former world, where factories are in decline and the legacy of Jim Crow is still felt, his actions will not only unsettle his family, but stir up the entire town. The incredible wealth that JJ has attained will force everyone to consider the cards they’ve been dealt, what more they want and deserve, and how they might go about getting it. With echoes of The Great Gatsby this is an arresting and powerful novel about an extended African American family and their colliding visions of the American Dream. Stephanie Powell Watts is an American author. She won a Whiting Award in 2013 and an Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence in 2012 for her book We are Taking Only what We Need a collection of 11 stories which chronicles the lives of African-Americans in North Carolina. Queens is a city within a city: a land of parks and beaches, battlegrounds and cemeteries, highways and airports. Spanning more than a hundred square miles and home to over two million people, the borough is a sprawling history lesson. In Hidden History of Queens, Richard Panchyk attempts to wrap his arms around the full breadth of Queens and the depth of its history, and shares what he learns along the way. Panchyk is the author, editor, or translator of 33 books on a range of topics in children's and adult nonfiction. He will be joined by Lori DiBella Wallach, an archivist specializing in oral history, digital preservation and community history. Dance Performance | Intervention: Ocean Blues: Dance, Improvisation, Audience Interaction

Artist Laura Anderson Barbata and the Brooklyn Jumbies give audiences a chance to to acknowledge our intersecting identities and to celebrate and honor them by changing behaviors to protect our oceans. Combining stilt dancing, procession, ritual, improvisation and audience interaction, Ocean Blues unfolds in an urban environment highly dependent on the health of the oceans, even though it may not be overtly obvious to our urban communities. The performance is inspired by all the forms of life that make the ocean their home, in particular the extraordinary bioluminescent sea creatures that live in the least explored depths of our ocean and have the gift of creating their own light. Ocean Blues is a reminder that we must bring light to the crisis impacting our oceans, and draw attention to the urgent need to elevate and change the values and practices of private industry, policy and our own personal choices; to address responsibly sustainable development goals set by the United Nations.
