Staged Reading | Shakespeare for Everyone: Twelfth Night, or What You Will

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night centers around the twins Viola and Sebastian who are separated in a shipwreck, each fearing the other lost to the sea. Viola falls in love with Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with the Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her thinking she is a man. Meanwhile, Sebastian has been rescued by Antonio, a sea captain who previously fought against Orsino, who accompanies him to the island of Illyria, despite the danger. Confusion over Sebastian’s identity – and exactly who is promised to whom – soon follows in this romantic comedy. The Shakespeare readings are set up to make Shakespeare accessible. Musical | Twelfth Night: A Musical Re-Imagining of Shakespeare

Professional artists and two rotating ensembles of community members from all five boroughs will perform together on the Delacorte stage in this enchanting comedy about Viola (Nikki M. James), a young heroine who washes up on the shores of Illyria, disguises herself as a man, is sent to court a countess, and falls in love with a Duke. Featuring music and lyrics by critically-acclaimed songwriter Shaina Taub, this very special Twelfth Night is a unique partnership between two Public Theater programs that exemplify The Public’s commitment to radical inclusion. Oskar Eustis, The Public’s Artistic Director, and Kwame Kwei-Armah, incoming Artistic Director of London’s Young Vic, helm this unforgettable musical about love in all its many disguises.
