Performance | We Wear the Masc: Art Song, Verse, Poetry

Brian McQueen's performance piece that explores the intersectionality of being black, femme and queer in the 21st century through the mediums of art song, verse, poetry. The piece explores masculinity as a plurality not solely performed in manner. Brian McQueen’s bass-baritone juxtaposed with their femme identity and performance beckons a broadening of the conversation surrounding black effeminacy; most specifically as a male-bodied person. McQueen reassigns classic poetic text of songs from standard recital repertoire to comment on gender identity, the serviceability of gender, gender performance, race, as well as creating space & visibility as an act of human being with non-binary identification as lens.

Book Club | Richard Wright's Native Son

The book tells the story of 20-year-old Bigger Thomas, an African American youth living in utter poverty in a poor area on Chicago's South Side in the 1930s. While not apologizing for Bigger's crimes, Wright portrays a systemic inevitability behind them. Bigger's lawyer, Boris Max, makes the case that there is no escape from this destiny for his client or any other black American since they are the necessary product of the society that formed them and told them since birth who exactly they were supposed to be. Richard Wright (1908-1960) wrote novels, short stories, poems, and non-fiction. Much of his literature concerns racial themes, especially related to the plight of African Americans during the late 19th to mid-20th centuries, who suffered discrimination and violence in the South and the North. Literary critics believe his work helped change race relations in the United States in the mid-20th century. Please read the book before arriving at the book discussion.
