You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. The exhibition explores the confluence of art, love, science, and religion in the extraordinary art of Orra White Hitchcock, one of America’s first female scientific illustrators. White exhibited a prodigious scientific mind and abundant artistic talent at an early age. The exhibition traces her development from schoolgirl projects to highly accomplished renderings of the natural scenery of the Connecticut River Valley used in her husband’s many geology publications. Less well known are colorful paintings on cotton—some more than twelve feet long—that were used to illustrate her husband’s many college lectures on geology, botany, zoology, and anatomy. Akie Bermiss is a pianist, composer, and singer who lives and works in Brooklyn. Since graduating from Bard College with a degree in music composition, Bermiss has made a name for himself with his signature sound—a voice that blends R&B, jazz, hip hop, and funk effortlessly. He is currently touring with Lake Street Dive, and he has recorded and performed with Aabaraki, the Screaming Headless Torsos, Miri Ben-Ari (the Hip Hop Violinist), and rap sensation Soul Khan. He also works with his own band, the Akie Bermiss Trio, and he is also the author of a children’s book, I Hate to Be Sick, published by Scholastic.

Dance Performance | Madiba: A Ballet Inspired by Nelson Mandela


The Black Iris Project has been using movement to celebrate black artists since 2016. The performance will include a ballet inspired by the life of the late Nelson Mandela, whose 100th birthday is being commemorated this year. The work, which was selected by the celebrated ballerina Misty Copeland and previously performed at the The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2017, will be followed by the world premiere of A Mother’s Rite, featuring former Alvin Ailey soloist and Tony-nominated dancer Karine Plantadit. The ballet is set to a four-hand piano version of The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky.
