Jazz | 10th Annual Stan Michels Memorial Jazz Concert


Honor the late Council Member Stan Michels at the tenth annual Memorial Jazz Concert. Enjoy live jazz by local impresario Marjorie Eliot and her ensemble underneath the majestic elms on the promenade, alongside the beautiful garden and overlooking the Hudson River. Stan Michels represented Northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants for the expansion of the city’s recycling program, for the protection of our water supply and cleaner air, and against childhood lead poisoning, smoking in public places, and unreasonable noise. He was also a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district.

Tour | Maren Hassinger: Monuments: Site-Specific Sculptures


Maren Hassinger: Monuments will consist of eight site-specific sculptures installed for approximately one year. Hassinger, who has been associated with the Studio Museum since 1984, is a Harlem-based multidisciplinary artist whose work, spanning performance, installation, sculpture, and video, are often meditations on nature and community. Hassinger will use branches to create forms that respond to aspects of the park’s landscape—an outcropping of rock, a triangle near flower beds, an oval near the pool.

Gallery Talk | Gallery Tour: Charting the Divine Plan: The Art of Orra White Hitchcock (1796–1863)


The exhibition explores the confluence of art, love, science, and religion in the extraordinary art of Orra White Hitchcock, one of America’s first female scientific illustrators. White exhibited a prodigious scientific mind and abundant artistic talent at an early age. The exhibition traces her development from schoolgirl projects to highly accomplished renderings of the natural scenery of the Connecticut River Valley used in her husband’s many geology publications. Less well known are colorful paintings on cotton—some more than twelve feet long—that were used to illustrate her husband’s many college lectures on geology, botany, zoology, and anatomy.
