City Walk | Walking Tour: Immigrants of the East Village

Take this summer's coolest walking tour with Tompkins Square Library manager Corinne Neary and street photographer Michael Paul. Once the most densely crowded district in America, the East Village started as a true melting pot of immigrants. It was New York City's first racially integrated neighborhood. Eastern European Jews, Germans, Italians, Irish, Greeks, Hungarians, Poles, Russians, Ukrainians, Puerto Ricans, Muslims, Indians, Koreans and Dominicans all made a new life here. Tompkins Square Park is a place where different cultures share their heritage: art, dance, food, fashion and music. After the Civil War, Tompkins Square Park was the only major open space for immigrants to gather and relax on the east side of Manhattan between Union Square and City Hall.
