Gallery Talk | Gallery Tour: Charting the Divine Plan: The Art of Orra White Hitchcock (1796–1863)

The exhibition explores the confluence of art, love, science, and religion in the extraordinary art of Orra White Hitchcock, one of America’s first female scientific illustrators. White exhibited a prodigious scientific mind and abundant artistic talent at an early age. The exhibition traces her development from schoolgirl projects to highly accomplished renderings of the natural scenery of the Connecticut River Valley used in her husband’s many geology publications. Less well known are colorful paintings on cotton—some more than twelve feet long—that were used to illustrate her husband’s many college lectures on geology, botany, zoology, and anatomy. A tour of led by museum gallery guides.

Workshop | Fallacy Bingo

Do you have a hard time identifying when a belief system is built on fallacious constructs? In order to help society understand the impact of fallacies on our thinking, CoLab Futures made a game, Fallacy Bingo. Spot, explain and properly identify some of the most common fallacies used in politics, journalism, science and social media today. Why? CoLab Futures explains, "Fallacies tend to shut down arguments preemptively, or distract from the core issue of an argument. Consequently, they work to build division between parties, and create fragmenting. In this age, it's a frequent occurrence. Calling fallacies out can help us move past them and address core issues. The goal of Fallacy Bingo is essentially, to provide the tools of awareness, and get past the bullshit."

Forum | The Supper Club: Dinner Conversations on Meaningful Social and Cultural Criticism

Artist Elia Alba will stage The Supper Club, inviting a select group of artists and cultural leaders of African-American, Latin American, African, South Asian and Caribbean descent for a dinner conversation. Addressing issues of art, life, pop culture, politics, gender and race, her goal is to create forums for meaningful social and cultural criticism, as well as create a critical historical archive, through a broad variety of creative voices, cultural, social, political and economic backgrounds, and a diverse set of critical perspectives. The Supper Club is a multi-faceted art project comprised of an ongoing series of socially engaged dinners in which discussions on race and visual culture have taken place since 2012; photographic portraits of nearly 60 artists of color, who have participated in the dinner conversations; and a book of the portraits and text related to the dinner conversations to be published in October of this year. Since its inception, the dinners have evolved to include over 400 participants. By bringing different perspectives and experiences to the table, the project aims to weigh in on the historical significance of the current moment and the enduring power of art, food, and conversation in our everyday lives. This will be the first time the dinners are open to the public. All conversations will be recorded and photographed, transcribed, and published—both online and as a booklet that will be available later in the year. Members of the public are encouraged to participate as audience members. As such, you'll become both an active listener and observer, being able to wander around the table participants, listen to what they are saying, and be inspired to find new entry points to, and perspectives on, these issues. \
