Concert | Baroque, Folkloric, and Contemporary Music of the Americas: Songs, Dance, & Poetry

Conceived by performer, composer, and American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*) member Keir GoGwilt, Zarabanda Variations brings together a group of visionary composers, performers, and poets in a surprising and vibrant synthesis of Baroque, folkloric, and contemporary music of the Americas. The members of the ensemble work across genres including traditional Mariachi and Baroque music, improvisation collectives in Mexico City and New York, and contemporary composition, creating new songs and dances inspired by the eclecticism of the zarabanda: a dance with Spanish, pre-Columbian American, and African origin stories. Woven in with the music is the poetry of Edgar Garcia, whose work maps the emergence of the Baroque through scenes of colonial and contemporary translation, emergency, and migration. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon.

Play | Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well in the Park

"This is the way Shakespeare wrote his plays to be seen." -The Huffington Post Get swept up in one of Shakespeare's boldest romantic comedies with New York Classical Theatre! Written around 1604, All's Well That Ends Well is one of Shakespeare's boldest romantic comedies. When Helena--a brilliant, determined young woman--heals a king, she earns the right to choose her husband. But love isn't so simple, and she must use wit, courage, and a daring plan to win the life she desires. Full of humor, heart, and twists, this rarely performed gem is a story of love on Helena's terms. New York Classical Theatre's signature style, Panoramic Theatre, turns public spaces into the world of the play. Instead of sitting in one place, the audience moves with the actors from scene to scene, following the action as it unfolds. This immersive approach creates a dynamic, interactive experience where every performance is shaped by its surroundings.

Performance | Tango-Opera Adaptation of the Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice

This performance is a new tango-infused version of Christoph Willibald Gluck's classic opera, Orfeo ed Euridice, set in a cabaret in Buenos Aires in the 1930s. In this version of Gluck's opera, the characters are transported to a carnival celebration in Buenos Aires in the 1930s and the score is orchestrated for a tango quartet. Gluck's re-orchestrated arias are the musical focus, while the recitatives, which traditionally provide dramatic context, are replaced by poetic texts written by great tango lyricists such as Jose Maria Contursi and Emilio Fresedo. The director set out to "recreate the myth of Orpheus, based on Gluck's opera, from a female perspective during carnival celebrations, which have traditionally been a space of social subversion where anyone can be a 'king' or 'queen' for a day. All inequalities are erased during the festivities, but at the end of the day each one returns to their reality, and those socially forbidden behaviors that surfaced under the masks reveal who we really are."
