A panel discussion with Bobo Lo, independent analyst and author of several books on Russian foreign policy, and Ted Hopf, National University of Singapore, moderated by Fiona Hill, Brookings Institution. How sustainable is Russia’s international revisionism and what are the implications for its relationship with the West? Is current Russian foreign policy orientation the result of the leadership of President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle, or has Russia made a decisive break from the West? How important are factors like social status and prestige in Russia’s current foreign policy identity? And is Russia’s public strategic partnership with China still an “axis of convenience,” or will it deepen to form a counter-Western pole designed to challenge Western-led security and global governance architectures?

Lecture | Political Identity and Conflict in Central Angola, 1975–2002

For more than a quarter-century after independence, Angola was divided by armed conflict. While most studies of the war have focused on its external linkages in the context of the Cold War and the struggle against apartheid, the research that speaker Justin Pearce will talk about is focused on Angolan people’s relationship to the rival political forces whose enmity prevented the development of a united nation. His conclusions are based on original interviews with farmers and town dwellers, soldiers and politicians in Central Angola.

Lecture | The Future: Beyond the Empiricist Trap?

“EMPIRICISM GIVES THE PAST A VERY LOUD VOICE!” was the slogan Johan Galtung launched back in 1965, arguing epistemological equality between past and future--the present is a thin line between them. How can we, in these times of great change, bridge the past and the future here in the present? What is the relation today between theory, data, and value in thinking about the future? In an anti-Weberian vein, this landmark lecture explores how social science—and society at large—fell into the empiricist trap, how it relates to structural violence today, and how we can and must get out of it if we hope to have a future. Speaker Johan Galtung, the founder of the discipline of peace studies, is a mathematician, sociologist, and political scientist. He founded the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (1959), the world's first academic research center focused on peace studies, as well as the influential Journal of Peace Research (1964). He has mediated in over 150 conflicts between states, nations, religions, civilizations, communities, and persons since 1957.

Discussion | Activism in Context: An Intergenerational Dialogue on Organizing in the Shadow of the 2016 Elections

This year’s historic 2016 election casts a long shadow over the history of feminist activism across different generations. The first in a series of dialogues with the classes of 1968–1974, this event offers an opportunity for social justice feminists to engage in generative dialogues with activists across generations. Current students join alumnae from the class of 1971, including Katherine Brewster and Janet Price, who were catalyzed by their involvement in anti-war movements, anti-gentrification organizing, protests to end institutionalized anti-Black racism on campus, and their experiences of gender oppression within activist communities. Senior Activist Fellow Katherine Acey moderates a vital discussion that promises to illuminate our current political landscape with the hard-won wisdom of our past struggles.

Lecture | Queer/Animal/Theory: Psychoanalysis and Subjectivity

A lecture by Carla Freccero, Feminist Studies, University of California, Santa Cruz. Both animal studies and queer theory share theoretical inheritances, even as they diverge in some of their philosophical and political commitments. This talk assesses the (non-exclusive) reciprocal impact of animal studies and queer theory. In particular Freccero is interested in how subjectivity and one of its privileged analytics, psychoanalysis, can be understood to be queer animal theory insofar as psychoanalysis has, since its inception, concerned itself with how mammals become human through specific technologies of subject-formation without assuming the successful result of such a process in advance. Psychoanalysis is always already queer in that it does not presume a pre-existing model of sexuality and gender from which to extrapolate a normative outcome. Likewise, Freccero argues, psychoanalysis does not presume “the human” as its starting point for analyzing how adult human subjectivity is achieved. This latter contention will occupy the bulk of Freccero’s argument as she experimentally sketches the possibility of non-anthropocentric theories of the specificity of animal subjectivity, all the while seeking to de-reify and de-universalize the presumed generality of such terms as “the animal” and “the human.”

Lecture | The Lion, the Emblems and the Wardrobe: Some of D’Annunzio’s Renaissance and Baroque Secrets in the Vittoriale

A lecture by Alessandro Giammei, Princeton University. Italy’s most famous late-modern poet, novelist, war hero, and viveur was also a collector (and forger!) of medals, a peruser of antique illustrated books, and an exquisite interior decorator. Such peculiar qualities made Gabriele D’Annunzio an extraordinary re-user and re-inventor of Renaissance and Baroque word-image devices called emblems and imprese. However, this sophisticated line of work has been ignored or misunderstood by scholars, by readers, and by the many devotees that today repeat (and even retweet) his memorable mottos ignoring their erudite 17th century humanistic origins.

Discussion | Poets Read: Dawn Lundy Martin / Anne Waldman

Dawn Lundy Martin is the author of three books of poetry, including Life in a Box Is a Pretty Life, which investigates the ways in which language claims absolute knowledge and draws a box around lived experience. Martin’s poems “are necessary, and hot on the eye” (Fanny Howe). She is a founding member of the Black Took Collective, a group of experimental black poets, and teaches at the University of Pittsburgh. Anne Waldman is the author of more than 40 collections of poetry and poetics, including the recent Voice's Daughter of a Heart Yet to Be Born, which juxtaposes “lyric arcana, journalism, critical fragments, visions of mythic and mystic beings, narrative, polemics, and even ekphrasis,” creating “a work that is simultaneously jeremiad and psalm” (Lyn Hejinian). She is a co-founder, with Allen Ginsberg, of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University.

Author Reading | Robert Starr discusses his book Intimate Geometries: The Art and Life of Louise Bourgeois

Intimate Geometries: The Art and Life of Louise Bourgeois is the first comprehensive survey of Bourgeois’s oeuvre and biography, and a unique critical evaluation of the intertwining of the two. Robert Storr, acknowledged as Bourgeois’s leading interpreter, worked closely with the artist on this book for some twenty years. He describes her sometimes fitful but extraordinarily long and prolific career and explores the many metamorphic aspects of the work to which the alternating currents of her imagination gave rise to. Long awaited, this handsome volume is sure to be among the major artists’ biographies of our time, confirming her legendary status, both as a witness to art history in her era and as one of its moving forces. Intimate Geometries is a riveting look into the life and works of this iconic artist.
