Talk | The Russian-Ukrainian Conflict: A Clash of Civilizations?

The current Russian-Ukrainian conflict has brought to the fore a number of unresolved issues that have simmered throughout the twentieth century. On the one side is the Russian question that includes elements of imperial traditions, Eurasianism, Orthodoxy, and all-Russian identity. On the other is the Ukrainian question that involves elements of Ukrainian national distinctiveness, religious pluralism, state-building, and Ukraine’s place in Europe. Throughout the twentieth century Russian thinkers from Nikolai Trubetzkoy to Alexander Solzhenitsyn found the Ukrainian national movement a challenge to their concepts of Russian identity. The Maidan, the seizure of the Crimea, and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict have brought unresolved issues to a head. A presentation by Professor Frank E. Sysyn (University of Alberta, CIUS).

Discussion | Feminist Strategies: Dissent Magazine Issue Launch

Take part in a discussion on feminist movements with Dawn Foster, Premilla Nadasen, and Ann Snitow, moderated by Sarah Leonard. A virulent misogynist is soon to be president of the United States. He has bragged about sexually assaulting women, threatened to repeal abortion rights, and will refuse to protect transgender individuals from discrimination. His proposals to ban immigrants, reject refugees he deems “terrorists,” and cut federal climate spending will have serious consequences for everyone, especially women. And if he follows through on his promise to "bomb the shit" out of countries he deems his enemies, women abroad will suffer too. Now, more than ever, feminists in the United States need the solidarity of women’s movements across the country and abroad, sharing their experiences and strategies as a resource in the fight to come. Whether it is young mothers fighting Conservative austerity policies in the UK or Polish feminists defending their reproductive rights under a right-wing government, each of these movements show that gender oppression must be confronted as relentlessly as other kinds of oppression. Most importantly, they show that even when the space for radical politics constricts, we must do more than simply defend our gains—our movements must move forward and demand more, not only for women but for everyone.

Lecture | Romancing the Truth: Vernacular History and the Origin of Fiction

In her influential Romancing the Past, Gabrielle Spiegel argued that early 13th-c. vernacular prose played a key role in enabling a truly historical discourse to disengage itself from fictional writing. Her analysis often presupposes, however, definitions of ‘fiction’ and ‘history’ that do not map comfortably either on to medieval terminology, or on to medieval textual practice. The early thirteenth-century Histoire ancienne jusqu’à César—one of Spiegel’s key texts—repeatedly offers or alludes to multiple versions of well-known episodes of its ‘history’ (such as the Trojan horse or Eneas’ descent into hell), in order explicitly to vaunt the verisimilitude of its own account in contrast to the fables in circulation. This lecture will argue that texts like the Histoire ancienne thereby define ‘fiction’ far more clearly than they do ‘history’ and also that the transmission of the Histoire ancienne can be used to demonstrate that the fluid boundary between ‘history’ and ‘fiction’ remains problematic—and fascinating—throughout the Middle Ages. Indeed, the category to which the various forms of writing in vernacular prose (whether ‘historical’ or ‘fictional’) are all committed is the truth, but how then is the truth to be told in the relatively new and unstable medium of vernacular prose? Lecturer Simon Gaunt, Professor of French Language and Literature at King’s College London, is a leading figure in French Studies internationally, and particularly well known for his work on medieval literature in French and Occitan.
