Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Lecture | A Case Study of the Nubians and the Kenya Slum Upgrading Project

In recent years a number of important postcolonial critiques of recognition theory have emerged (Coulthard 2014, Simpson 2014) that challenge assumptions about the normative effects of recognition in the asymmetrical power contexts of settler societies. In both recognition theory in general, and this emerging body of postcolonial critique, less attention has been paid to asymmetrical recognition relationships in non-settler postcolonies. Samantha Balaton-Chrimes begins to explore this territory through an analysis of an international development project. The paper establishes international development firstly as a field of recognition, and secondly as a field of recognition in which coloniality is at play. It goes on to provide a detailed account of the dynamics of misrecognition and non-recognition in the struggle between the Nubian ethnic minority group in Kenya, and the UN Habitat Kenya Slum Upgrading Project. The Nubians claim Kibera as their ancestral land, and this claim is a pivotal part of their identity as Kenyans, but it has not been acknowledged or recognised by the project.

Opening Reception | Mario Merz's Early Works: Mixed Media

An exhibition of historic early works by Mario Merz. A leading member of Italy’s Arte Povera movement of the 1960s and 70s, Merz created paintings, sculptures, and installations with an aim to oppose a monolithic culture and to celebrate perplexity. This goal manifested itself in the artist’s deviation from the mass-media iconography popularized by Pop Art, the mythic emotionalism of Abstract Expressionism, and the machismo detachment of Minimalism. Instead, Merz and his Arte Povera contemporaries – such as Alighiero e Boetti, Luciano Fabro, and Jannis Kounellis, among others – employed simple, everyday materials and perceptive references to nature in order to ground their art in a relatable existential ambiguity.

Author Reading | Gerald Raunig discusses his book Dividuum: Machinic Capitalism and Molecular Revolution

As the philosophical, religious, and historical systems that have produced the “individual” (and its counterparts, society and community) over the years continue to break down, the age of “dividuality” is now upon us. The roots of the concept of the “dividuum” can be traced back to Latin philosophy, when Cicero used the term to translate the “divisible” in the writings of Epicurus and Plato; later, medieval scholars utilized the term in theological discussions on the unity of the trinity. Grounding himself in the writings of the medieval bishop Gilbert de Poitiers and his extensive commentaries on Boethius, Gerald Raunig charts a genealogy of the concept and develops a philosophy of dividuality as a way of addressing contemporary modes of production and forms of life. Through its components of dispersion, subsistence, and similarity, dividuality becomes a hidden principle of obedience and conformity, but it also brings with it the potential to realize disobedience and noncompliant con/dividualities. .

Workshop | DharmaPunx NYC: A Workshop for Mental Clarity

The ability to create a state of awareness that is simultaneously spacious and grounded supports our ability to step out of the conditioned reactivity of daily life and see the contents of our mind moving through clearly – without the usual subjective overlay of self and personal history. When practiced regularly, these practices lead to a mental clarity which enables the release of old habit patterns and limiting beliefs which, in turn, reduce our levels of stress and afflictive states of mind. Josh Korda has been the guiding teacher at Dharma Punx NYC since 2005. He has a large Buddhist mentoring private practice and contributes regularly Buddhist magazines such as Lions Roar, Tricycle, and Bhuddhadharma. His first book is due out in 2017. Kathy Cherry is a founding member of Dharma Punx NYC and a trained Facilitator through Against the Stream Meditation Society in Los Angeles. She teaches weekly at MNDFL NYC and offers Mindfulness courses for a variety of corporate clients in the city.
