Lecture | Corruption and Politics in Brazil

Brazil is facing a challenging moment. Its process of democratic construction, that was considered successful by most political and academic criteria, is undergoing the test of an impeachment and a non-elected government with a conservative and anti-rights agenda. These elements are related to an anti-corruption probe, Lava Jato (Car Wash), that some consider a breakthrough and others consider a biased political investigation against the Workers’ Party (the party of the ousted president Rousseff). The lecture will shed light on the core issues concerning the probe, campaign funding and the increased power of the judiciary. Speaker Leonardo Avritzer is professor at the Department of Political Science of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and Senior Scholar of the state-run National Council of Scientific and Technological Development.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Lecture | 'Faraway, So Close': Transatlantic Data Flows and the Protection of Privacy

In the 1990s and early 2000s many scholars predicted a convergence of privacy law in the EU and the U.S. They have been proven wrong. What we have witnessed is not the emergence of shared constitutional standards or of a transatlantic privacy treaty. Rather, constitutional law in Europe and the U.S. is heading in diametrically opposite directions: While the U.S. Supreme Court has effectively abandoned the right to privacy, the European Court of Justice is engaging in its hyper-constitutionalization. This puts transatlantic data flow regulation in a difficult spot. Given that most of us use technology that sends data across the Atlantic on a daily basis, finding a common framework belongs to today’s most pressing political and legal problems. In his presentation, Thomas Wischmeyer argues for a new regime that takes the quality of informational privacy as a fundamental right into account, but also considers the external effects constitutional choices have in a connected world.

Lecture | Nice One: The Wages of Tokenism

This talk by Bidoun editor Negar Azimi walks through several vignettes hovering in and around the vexed question of token gestures: How do critics make sense of cultural difference? How to grapple with variance in language, experience, form, and format? What role does taste play? What of political histories hovering in the background? Finally, Azimi asks about the price of art criticism that “makes nice.”
