Conference | Anywhere and Elsewhere: Art at the Outermost Limits of Location-Specificity

Artists are increasingly moving beyond the white cube as a "prime" viewing experience to more actively explore spaces, places and times well outside the limits of traditional exhibition circuits. Much of this artistic activity is concerned with events, actions, relationships or processes rather than the exhibition of discrete distributable objects. This two-day conference will explore the challenge of exhibiting, viewing and evaluating art located elsewhere in space and time. How do artists overcome common assumptions that expanded and dynamic exhibition formats present barriers to value? How do we find appropriate language and evaluative criteria for discussing projects that often straddle art and other realms of knowledge? How might we more meaningfully account for art’s omnivorous ability to traverse diverse forms, spaces and places and evoke understandings potentially elusive in theoretical, scientific or philosophical propositions alone? This conference is specifically conceived as a vehicle for giving voice to artistic projects located anywhere and elsewhere in space and time.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Lecture | Three Voices of Modern Musical Poetry: Stevens, Eliot, Valéry

Opposite as their philosophical aims may be, and however distant he may declare himself from Eliot’s poetic practice, Stevens nevertheless praises Eliot for his modern musicality. Both poets theorize and practice a musical poetic that shares many features. Stevens and Eliot, too, have great admiration for symbolist poetics, and, in particular, for Paul Valéry, who carved a musical aesthetic for modern poetry. This presentation will engage the musical poetics of all three poets, drawing together poetic voices which are not often seen in relation to one another.

Opening Reception | Miles Aldridge's Please Return Polaroid: A Show of Polaroids

An exhibition of over 30 unique Polaroid prints, 10 unique Polaroid diptychs and five large color prints. This is the artist’s third solo exhibition at the gallery since 2009. Miles Aldridge’s Polaroids have been exhumed from their original context of preparatory sketches. Bearing hand-written notes, sharpie drawings, or chemical chimeras, Aldridge’s Polaroids are like ravaged stills from an erotic film noir. They are rife with intrigue, sex, impulse, and accident. Like in all of Aldridge’s work, each image presents a narrative that is cinematic yet abstract, dream-driven yet precise.
