Tour | CANCELLED!! Metropolitan Avenue Walk: Williamsburg to Jamaica Turnpike CANCELLED!

The total distance: approximately 8.5 miles. The terrain is relatively flat with several rises of approximately 100 ft. which occur gradually over the course of several long city blocks. Walk the length of Metropolitan Avenue through Brooklyn and Queens from its western terminus by the East River (River Street) to the eastern end at Jamaica Avenue. According to Wikipedia, Metropolitan Avenue was "originally an Indian trail, [it] was constructed in 1816 as the Williamsburgh and Jamaica Turnpike, a toll road which connected the then villages of Williamsburgh (as it was originally spelled) and Jamaica, New York. The road became a farmer's and stage coach route to the Williamsburgh ferries across the East River to Manhattan.” There is one planned rest stop at the Rentar Plaza shopping center (65th Lane and Metropolitan Ave., Middle Village, Queens) which is approximately half way. The Q54 bus runs along Metropolitan Avenue, so there are numerous opportunities to drop off to take that bus or other bus lines that intersect Metropolitan. There are also at least two locations where there is a subway stop. The walk will end at the border of Richmond Hill and Jamaica, Queens, where Metropolitan Avenue runs into Jamaica Avenue, one block east of the Van Wyck Expressway. There is a nearby E train station at the Van Wyck and several bus lines in the area, which can be taken the short distance to Sutphin Blvd and the Jamaica Center, where there are several bus, subway and LIRR stations. Please bring snacks, lunch and drink. There are numerous food stores along the way, including fast food and old style deli/bodega shops. There will be limited stops at points of interest, but the primary meal/rest room break will be at Rentar Plaza.

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Discussion | Europe and America in the Black Literary Imagination

This panel will look at how black authors on both sides of the ocean have engaged the country and culture on the other side. Is France an escape for black authors? Is America the land of individual expression and opportunity? After the Second World War, prominent African-American authors such as Richard Wright, James Baldwin and Chester Himes made Paris their home. French authors have themselves long been fascinated by the United States, and New York in particular. This common interest has fed many authors’ writing, both thematically and stylistically. Laurent Dubois, Darryl Pinckney, Maboula Soumahoro and Scholastique Mukasonga will reflect on this mutual fascination and ponder how it has impacted their own work and influenced literature more broadly. But how substantive is this connection? Is it myth or reality?

Opening Reception | Polka Dots: Sculptures by Carol Bove

Bove is known for her assemblages that combine found and made elements. Incorporating a wide range of domestic, industrial, and natural objects, her sculptures, paintings, and prints reveal the poetry of their materials. As the art historian Johanna Burton notes in the catalogue accompanying this exhibition, “Bove brings things together not to nudge associative impulses into free play driven by the unconscious, but rather to conjure a kind of affective tangle that disrupts any singular, historical narrative.”
