Workshop | Intro Class: The Alchemy of the Chakras

With: Thomas Amelio Chakra practice is one of the most powerful and complete means for awakening, healing and transformation. Central to the yoga tradition, chakras are spiritual, psychological and emotional energy centers within the subtle body. Ideally, they work in harmony; however, their full expression is often hampered by negative conditioning and suppressions (karmas). For example, a fifth-chakra calling to self-express might be inhibited by a first-chakra fear of losing safety. Yoga offers practices to purify the chakras and bring them into full, radiant expression. We will explore the function of each chakra; the mantras and archetypes associated with them; and the practices of vichara (inquiry), pranayama (breath practice), mudra (hand seals), bandha (energy locks) and kumbhak (breath holding) to bring greater clarity and balance to our lives.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Elaine Stocki's Hoar Frost

Hoar Frost refers to the rare crystallization that descends upon the natural world overnight, momentarily suspending it and symbolically evoking the unease that has crept into our collective present. In these new works, the artist reverses her processes, merging abstract painting with her history of working with the figure in photography. Whereas Stocki’s prior exhibition comprised primarily hand-tinted black and white photographs, the color prints in Hoar Frost integrate painting within the process of photographing. Gestural mark making appears in the images, uniting various elements of performance, installation and documentation.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Tomashi Jackson's The Subliminal Is Now

The Subliminal Is Now investigates color as a vehicle for painting, complex narrative, and emotion around a nexus of materiality, figuration, and light. This body of work interrogates the subliminal impact of color perception on the value of human life in public space. Color operates as projection, reflection and obstruction, as both subliminal and sublime. Catalyzed by an interest in the history of school desegregation in the United States, against a contemporary backdrop of explicitly illustrated dehumanization of Black people and specifically Black children, Jackson's research is the narrative framework from which her own language of abstraction emerges.

Discussion | The War on Poverty at 50

The nation chooses what histories will be publicly heralded, and which will be pushed aside. While huge celebrations commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery march, the 50th anniversary of the war on poverty barely garnered a mention. The fact that the war on poverty did succeed for a time in lowering U.S. poverty and gave communities new resources to organize for themselves is not publicly remembered, nor are the ways it was maligned and reversed through mass incarceration and race-based attacks on public assistance. This prohram will mark 50 years after the war on poverty, and explore how we ended up with such high poverty rates once again in the U.S. today. Join an urgent conversation with Elizabeth Hinton, Alejandra Marchevsky and Crystal Sanders as we look at the key changes the war on poverty wrought in access to early education, food, and public assistance -- and the ways it was dismantled with the war on drugs and welfare reform.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Andy Warhol: Idolized

The exhibition will examine Warhol’s idolization of various subject matters through a carefully curated body of work, which includes paintings and screenprints. Arguably the most iconic artist of his era, Andy Warhol transformed the landscape of contemporary art. He led the pop art movement by challenging preconceived notions about the nature of art and erasing traditional distinctions between fine art and popular culture. Ironically, by depicting everyday objects, and Americana he elevated these themes into the realm of fine art. Warhol portrayed these commercial objects of consumerism, which were also symbols of high society and fashion, furthering the romanticization of his thematic focus, as seen in his Diamond Dust Shoes.

Moderated by political cartoonist Eli Valley, Ink Bleeds History: Reclaiming and Redrawing the Jewish Image in Comics represents a new generation of artists illustrating the Jewish narrative around the world, featuring Amy Kurzweil and her memoir Flying Couch, the creators of the online fiction series Radzyn, and Miriam Libicki on her newest collection of graphic essays, Toward a Hot Jew.

Discussion | Love and Its Pathologies

How different is the love/hate relationship between a mother and daughter and the psychosis of an erotomaniac or the obsessive passion of a student for a professor? Florence Noiville and Norman Manea explore the pathologies of love from the most routine and banal to those that border on sickness. Noiville suggests that in literature, as in neuroscience, to be “madly in love” means just that—no more, no less.
FLORENCE NOIVILLE is staff literary critic for Le Monde and foreign fiction editor of Le Monde des Livres. She is the author of, among others, Isaac Bashevis Singer: A Life and the novels The Gift and A Cage in Search of a Bird. Born in 1936 in Romania, NORMAN MANEA is one of the most celebrated international authors of the past half century. His novels, short fiction, and literary essays have been translated into more than 20 languages. Since 1988, he has been writer in residence at Bard College.

Author Reading | Robert Trumpbour and Kenneth Womack read from their book The Eighth Wonder of the World

When it opened in 1965, the Houston Astrodome, nicknamed the Eighth Wonder of the World, captured the attention of an entire nation, bringing pride to the city and enhancing its reputation nationwide. It was a Texas-sized vision of the future, an unthinkable feat of engineering with premium luxury suites, theater-style seating, and the first animated scoreboard. Yet there were memorable problems such as outfielders’ inability to see fly balls and failed attempts to grow natural grass—which ultimately led to the development of Astroturf.

Talk | Töpffer and Cham, Caricaturists: The Amateur and the Professional

Two caricaturists dominate the emerging field of the French comic strip from the 1830s onward: the Genevan Rodolphe Töpffer and the Parisian Cham (pseudonym of Count Amédée de Noé). The undisputed father of the modern comic strip or graphic novel, Töpffer always pretended to denigrate his “little follies,” as he called them, among other disparaging terms, and which he executed in spare corners of his life as director of a boys’ school and university professor. Cham, by contrast, inspired by, and at one point a collaborator of Töpffer, quickly became a dominant figure in the French premier magazine of graphic satire, Le Charivari. He engaged full-time in all the major caricature formats then practiced, including close to 40 comic strips or graphic novelettes, published in albums and magazine installments. Speaker: David Kunkle

Concert | Ethiopian Funk: The Debo Band

Led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by charismatic vocalist Bruck Tesfaye, the Debo Band serves up a bold reimagination of Ethiopian popular music that conjures up 1970s Addis Ababa with “fierce, jagged, complex, and galvanizing music” (New York Times). This big band doesn’t just cover neglected tracks from around the world, they rearrange them and up the ante. The process can get wildly imaginative, finding flights of fantasy in underappreciated historical moments, be it Duke Ellington’s travels through Ethiopia or the musical impact of Haile Selassie sending Ethiopian soldiers to fight in the Korean War. Earthy dance floor beats merge with psychedelic effects, rock drive, and spot-on brass—injecting vintage tracks with new life and purpose.

Discussion | From the Margins to the Mainstream: High Art vs. Low Art in France and the U.S.

In the past twenty years we’ve seen television move from the realm of pedestrian art to the realms of the auteur. And yet even as comic book movies dominate commercially, comics in America have yet to escape the image of being the property of teen boys. Moderated by Ta-Nehisi Coates, producer David Simon (The Wire), graphic novelists Kelly Sue Deconnick (Captain Marvel) and Catherine Meurisse (La Légèreté), and spoken word artist D’ de Kabal (Chants Barbares) will look at how and why certain art forms—from television to comic books and slam poetry—move from low art to high art. They will also explore how those same art forms are considered within the realms of French and American culture.

Marilyn Nonken is one of the most celebrated champions of the modern repertoire of her generation, known for performances that explore transcendent virtuosity and extremes of musical expression. Upon her 1993 New York debut, she was heralded as "a determined protector of important music" (New York Times). She is recognized as"one of the greatest interpreters of new music" (American Record Guide). Concert | Schmieds Puls, Vienna-Based 'Wonder-Trio'

Schmieds Puls is a Vienna-based trio, juggling their genre somewhere between Songwriting and Jazz, Pop and Grunge. When Mira Lu Kovacs began writing songs on a trip from the American East to West Coast in 2011, she started out as a solo act. In 2012, she met Christian Grobauer and Walter Singer and invited them to play with her at a festival show. That turned out so well (“it was love!”) that Schmieds Puls transformed into a band. The Austrian wonder-trio Schmieds Puls hit the NYC stage for the very first time.
